1. I made chili, no recipe, & a discovery about being out of chili powder

My chili is rarely from a recipe, this afternoon I put an onion, several minced cloves of garlic, a pound of ground beef, a can each of kidney & black beans, unrinsed, & a 20 ounce can of tomatoes. Dry spices were cumin, oregano and the* last tablespoon on chili powder*. After a 20min simmer I realized the taste was a bit wimpy for me, so I added in a tablespoon of harassa paste, a north African spice mix of chilies, garlic, olive oil, that worked.

I ate a bowl with sourdough crackers and decafe tea. I also have 3 frozen meals for later.

We’re at a marina halfway through the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal and the restaurant serves crabs. After four nights on the anchor we need a break!

The First Mate has her eyes on the ones in the bucket that you hammer into bits before pickin’ ‘em. I love crab cakes. They serve several potato sides and I want a big salad. Greens don’t last long on a boat. They also serve local craft beers. We’ve decided we’ll split a piece of their deadly chocolate cake..

7. The 5 lb. lasagna. LOL

I've never actually weighed it, but it's always pretty dang heavy. There are only 3-4 layers, but it's packed. The bottom is a layer of sliced homemade meatballs (1/2 gr. chuck, 1/2 Italian sausage w/fennel) atop a base of homemade sauce (cooked all day in the slow cooker) and pasta, another layer of pasta topped with ricotta mixed with shredded Italian cheeses, an egg, salt, pepper and garlic, the final layer is one last layer of pasta topped with the pepperoni (sliced from a stick and browned to start the sauce) with more sauce and tons of shredded cheeses.

It's the first meal I ever made my now-husband before we were even thinking about marriage.

It's been getting dark here earlier and my kitchen lights aren't very bright, so couldn't get a good photo tonight no matter how hard I tried, but it looks like this one I made previously.

A lot like how my brother does his. My version is slightly "lighter". That would be like 3-4 pounds. The top looks perfect.

now you will have me dreaming about lasagna tonight.

It is one of my favorite dishes. Mollie Katzen has a recipe for green lasagna which I like a lot, too.

Lasagna is a lot of work but so worth it.

I put it together with the fried eggplant slices in place of each of the pasta layers. I don't use any meat because I started making it for a couple of vegetarian friends, but add mushrooms to the sauce and layer those in. Also mix Gorgonzola into the ricotta layer.

That one is much more work than the lasagna since I have to stand there and fry dozens of slices of eggplant.

with mashed potatoes and mushroom gravy (bought a pound of dried mushrooms last year, they last a long time and are handy to have around). Braised cabbage with black bean sauce and apples for dessert.
