So hello loves. I've been wanting to make this dish for a very long time for Thanksgiving. This is the year to do it since ours is gonna be pretty big. I always make green bean casserole, but I wanna make this too.
So who has made this? I need advice

(31,508 posts)Brown a lb. of ground beef. Add a diced onion and 2 or 3 stalks of sliced celery and cook until softened.
Stir in a few tablespoons of all purpose flour and cook for a few minutes to get rid of the raw taste. Gradually stir in enough beef stock to make a thick gravy. Season with salt, pepper and Worcestershire sauce to taste.
While it simmers, add a package of frozen mixed vegetables and cook until heated through. Place in a 2 qt. casserole or baking dish. Using 4 or 5 potatoes make mashed potatoes and spread over the top and bake at 350°F until hot and bubbly and lightly browned on top.
There are a lot of good recipes online with actual measurements that might be helpful. Good luck.

(57,073 posts)As I understand it, cottage pie has ground beef for meat. Shepherd's pie is lamb for meat.
Great idea imo! Enjoy!

(10,156 posts)In my case, turkey meat. Not a lot of people in my family eat red meat. I'd go for plant based if I could but not sure that would taste that good.

(15,933 posts)Its all about the seasonings, whether using meats or plant based products.
I served it to meat eaters and they couldnt tell the difference.
I say give it a go!

(17,254 posts)I replace the soy mince with either beyond meat or impossible burger. You could use whatever you choose. I go heavier on the soy sauce and maple syrup to taste. Delicious, rich filling.

(8,318 posts)As an Irish Catholic Bostonian, I grew up eating a lot of Shepherds Pie. The Irish go lamb, but good luck finding and affording ground lamb. This is the easy quick version, I have had a lot of ground beef pies, but this time of year, I get ground turkey, turkey gravy, beans, peas, stuffing and corn. While boiling potato and making stove top stuffing, Brown the turkey, drain fat, put in a large pan, put minimum of 2/3 jars of turkey gravy into the turkey and stir through, sprinkle either frozen or canned peas, beans and corn on top of the ground turkey. crumble stuffing into small pieces and sprinkle. Mash the potato and spread across the pan filling to the top. put the pan on a cookie sheet ( the gravu may bubble over) and place in the oven on 350. 30 minutes or so and you are good to go. you may want an extra jar of gravy on the side to add liberally. Salt and pepper to taste and you are goods to go.
To make a beef ( Hamburger) pie, replace the ground turkey with hamburger, beef gravy for turkey gravy and skip the stuffing. the rest is the same.

(10,156 posts)So instead of mashed taters, you do stuffing on top?

(8,318 posts)2 carrots, 2 celery stalks, one onion, one clove garlic, splash of olive oil, two pounds of ground chuck, 6 to 8 strong splashes of Worcestershire, 4 cups of beef broth, salt & pepper half can of tomato paste, half cup wondra flower, liberal red wine, a cup ( not wine glass but full cup) brown the meat, combine the rest and cover with mashed potoato and bake
