Fried rye bread croutons all we ever need. Top the soup with the croutons. We make our own.

for Cheese Puffs. It is basically a cream puff dough with bits of cheddar cheese folded in and then baked as cream puffs would be. I will be trying them soon. Would also be great with Chili. Will post when I create them.

and a little sour cream and you mixed it in yourself. Ha! Hadn’t thought of that in so many years.

she made the burgers full of onions, chunks of bread, egg and seasonings. She make a plate with lettuce leaves, sliced tomatoes, onion, ketchup, mustard, mayo, and dill pickles, so we could put what we wanted on our burgers and buns. She'd make a huge pot of pea soup made with dried peas, ham, onion, garlic and barley. One of the best meals we'd get when I was a kid.

Sweet cornbread with butter and a side of those hot, pickled jalapenos and carrots, lots of water or a good tea.

with butter. But knowing myself as I do, I'd probably just go with oyster crackers and be completely happy with that.

and tried it out on the rest of us. It tasted remarkably like split pea soup after she'd followed instructions and shoved everything but the strings through a food mill. I have to say it wasn't bad, at all and beat just throwing the pea pods out after the peas were extracted.

We ate sourdough rye bread & butter with it.

ETA: This one looks a bit better than the original, potatoes giving it a little more bite and body: https://www.thevegspace.co.uk/recipe-peapod-little-gem-soup/

The crust-to-bread ratio of a baguette (vs say a boule or Pullman) is optimum for scooping up a good thick soup. A little butter can help but it's not necessary. Maybe a salad if you're into that sort of thing.

Just made split pea soup about ten days ago. Made egg salad for sandwiches to go with the split pea soup. Used Italian bread for the sandwiches. Light rye is good but use any bread you happen to have on hand.

Here's my recipe for egg salad
Mix all together
4 hard boiled eggs, peeled and chopped.
1 raw carrot grated
3 or4 tablespoons sweet pickle relish
Mayonnaise -about 4 or 5 tablespoons
