Does watermelon freeze well?

I've been on a cubed watermelon kick this year. In salads, yogurt or as a plain snack. Also in sodas, tea and cocktails. I'm thinking of doing an ice cube tray thing, wrapped, to have some on hand.

(aside) Heard an interesting tidbit about the drought effects on some crops. Melons are sweeter. Firmer, not quite so juicy, but the sugars are pronounced.

But you probably would have good luck blending it and freezing in ice cube trays then blending when frozen for watermelon slushies.

3. No, the cell membranes will burst and you'll thaw it into pink mush

What you can do is buzz it in a blender or food processor and strain it, then freeze the juice.

Watermelon juice is wonderful stuff.

I agree with the others that it probably wouldn't do as well in whole fruit form. Juice and freeze it!

5. LOL. Juicing sounds like the consensus. I didn't think the freeze as is would go, either.

I'll go with some watermelon juice in the fridge and some frozen for later...

Heavily water-based cellular items do miserably.

Best might be to juice the hell out of it and freeze THAT, but the cellular structure will collapse in a frozen watermelon leaving you with, as others have noted, mush.
