Cooking & Baking
Related: About this forumI love freshly baked bread in the Fall and Winter. Does anyone else?
I find that it's not much work at all to put the ingredients in my bread machine and let the dough rise there as it stays at the proper temperature. Then I take the raw dough out, shape it, and bake it in the oven (I like the shape of it better and the crust better when it bakes in the oven, just seems to turn out better that way.)
Is anyone else baking some homemade bread/biscuits etc. these days? It sure is a nice smell when the bread is baking!

(31,518 posts)I'll be putting some cornbread in the oven in a little while to go with the pot of beans that's simmering on the stove right now. The season is right for these slow cooked comfort foods, but the temps have been so warm around here this fall that it just doesn't feel like the right time yet.

(9,762 posts)It's getting pretty scary. Sometimes I'm worried it's too late to prevent a big dieoff. I mean we still need to take action now but I think there has already been a lot of harm done and things might get pretty bad.
But for today we can enjoy our good bread and good food and be grateful for those things.
I have some cookbooks that highlight recipes from the south, and I find it so fascinating how different regions have emphasized different foods according to what was easily grown in that region and abundant. I find the Cajun tradition fascinating, with how ingenius they were with using local ingredients to transform the cuisine that came from Acadia with them, and it's fascinating how the melting pot in general has contributed to such a rich food culture here in the U.S.
I come from Montana and we are big on beef, potatoes and wheat up there. We can't hardly have a meal without at least one of those elements and a pretty good number of all the meals I ate growing up, had all three at once in them.

(9,762 posts)I'm keeping to super simple stuff for now. I might branch out one of these days though!
There's just something about bread that seems so basic and yet special all at the same time.
