So I threw a package of hash browns, some white onion, scallions, a shallot, some sour cream

and a packet of ranch dip into a bowl, mixed it, and threw it in the oven at 350 for 45 mins.

I'll let you know if it's any good.

Do you guys ever just experiment like this? Like just to get rid of ingredients?

I cook "on the fly" a lot. Mainly based around what's on hand. pinto Aug 2013 #2

i make those types of meals, usually because it's a few days before payday and the cabinets are getting bare. but cooking is supposed to be an adventure.

I usually tell DH it's "slop night" or that we are having some kind of traditional peasant food.

I do try to find a recipe that will accommodate what I have, just to get some ideas.

Hope it's good!

(besides being free) there's a "use up leftovers" thing where you can plug in up to 3 ingredients and it will search for recipes using same.
I made a similar thing recently. Frozen hash browns, cheddar cheese, sour cream, ranch dip mix and cooked, crumbled bacon. Seriously yummy!

The breakfast lasagna recipe we love from Big Oven, but it uses a can of cream of mushroom instead of ranch mix. I would live to try this recipe with the ranch mix (if I remember correctly, there is a homemade ranch mix recipe on Big Oven as well). I'm really looking forward to making this.
