(22,271 posts)I'm sure the others are as well but I had to add this. He taught the audience the beginnings of a pentatonic scale (a scale using 5 notes instead of 7 as we're used to). As a music majors, we were required to complete "juries" within our particular discipline. Juries are used to demonstrate proficiency on the instrument (including voice). Scales are one of those requirements in both Juries I & II. Now, scales are easy for an instrumentalist because it's just a matter of pressing the right keys, covering the right holes, etc. But vocalists have to be able to "hear" where they're going to go before they get there. Back to scales. The pentatonic scale was used as a Jury II requirement and takes most of us a day or two to get it down just because we don't use it that often. In this demonstration, he gives the audience the three of the five notes used in the pentatonic scale and the audience "figures out" the other two.
Anyway, as a former vocalist and teacher, I thought this was fascinating.
Sorry for the nerd moment. Carry on.
