If I buy fresh basil, most of it goes bad. I've found that balsamic vinegar reconstitutes
my store-bought freeze-dried basil very nicely.

I recently bought a tube of basil. It works ok for flavoring in a pinch, but I like a bright fresh whole leaf with my caprese.
