not of evil or money, but CELERY!

First time for me, got the ugly root , cleaned it up and used it in an apple-carrot-celery root salad one day with a light sweet vinaigrette. Fabulous. Next day used more of it in a mix of mashed potatoes (boil root with garlic and onions till soft add mashed spuds -heavy on cream and butter) and it was great, wonderful subtle flavors. Even my wife who thinks cheese on a burger is exotic loved both.
Next going for celery root soup.

It was a miserable flop! (I can't stop laughing here...)

Even though the yeast packet said "March 2014", the little beasties never activated.

It was like lead bricks coming out of the oven, even though I knew the bread wouldn't rise before I placed it in the oven.

I just kept laughing and laughing... then went to the grocery store and bought some rolls.

Except I didn't have the grace to laugh. I thought I'd make my own pumpernickel, as I didn't like the additives in the stuff from the store. Well, I found out that yes, you can make pumpernickel bread all right, but you'd better be prepared to eat a whole loaf in one day as it isn't any good after that. My pumpernickel was like a brick after the first day and it crumbled all over the place.

I never thought I'd say this, but some preservatives and additives serve a purpose.

Sigh. We live and we learn, yes?

Live and learn indeed. I'm off to the store today to buy s'more yeast. I'll try again next week.

(And yeah, some of those additives can serve a purpose, but we all agree that they should be limited, and that those that remain should serve a very specific purpose.)

The corn in Mexico is really different, so I'm not sure what to expect.

We shall see.

I cut to the chase. Which was pretty good. Leftovers and added ingredients are simmering for soup now.

We've had some nice afternoons here after the earlier chill. Looking forward to some serious rain, though. CA needs it.

I started off with Japanese cucumber salad which was totally outrageous because the cucumber was so fresh.

Next up will be some roasted Brussels sprouts. I hope I can find my water chestnuts. Love them with that crunch.

That's probably it but maybe a small bowl of beans if I'm still working late tonight. With a half of pumpernickel bagel.

Must be the time of year.

I did have bacon on a bagel for lunch, though.
