What's for Dinner, Wed., Aug. 20, 2013

Started off with an appetizer of salmon-egg salad on red pepper slices.

Next up will be lobster bisque.

Possibly a salad later on tonight.

Couple glasses of red.

Dessert: a plum and a little yogurt.

Made a little haul.. nothing near the numbers we were finding last year, but not bad considering how early it is, and the fact that we haven't really had much in the way of rain.

Gonna do those up in a baking dish with some chicken thighs, white wine and half & half.

And, just the fact that we found them, as hot and and dry as it's been, I'm hoping is a good sign that maybe this fall will be as extraordinary as last fall for picking.

Are you really good at knowing what is and is not safe? My father had an adverse reaction once that put him in the hospital. I think it had to do with drinking wine with them.

Does that sound plausible?

I'm getting pretty good at id'ing certain species. Of course, there's over, I believe, 3,000 species in Washington state so one would have to be pretty much a PhD mycologist to know them all lol. As for your father, yes, there is a variety of ink cap mushrooms that reacts with alcohol in one's system. Rumors say it was used as a treatment for severe alcoholism.

A tomato that was supposed to be an heirloom, but it was so mediocre that I don't think it was.

A half chicken on the grill, sweet potato, and steamed broccoli w/ lemon.

And since it's my day off - beer.

with a miracle whip and hot sauce coating. I finally finished jar #1 of my three free jars of miracle whip!!!

Also, leftover whole wheat hamburger buns repurposed into a caprese toast thing, and cucumber slices with a spicy greek yogurt dressing.

And now I'm realizing - I was all excited because I finally got a (mediocre) deal on parmesan cheese, $1.50 for the 8oz shaker jar, and I forgot to put in on the toast. Running to do that now while it's still in the oven.

that was very, very simple. Served it over some penne and added some good parmesan.

But wait! That's the primo!

For secondo, we had some steaks in a marsala sauce (meat not very good, but sauce good) and some braised carrots that I cooked for almost 2 hours. I could eat those carrots just about every day.

You dinner sounds wonderful.
