Lemon or Lime

I love both to add a bit of tart and sour to a dish, particularly chicken or salsa.

So, which do you prefer, and why if there is a specific reason?

can't really go wrong with either. We love them - and use them - both NRaleighLiberal Oct 2014 #5
I prefer limes, if they are good flavor and juicy. Often they are bitter and dry. northoftheborder Oct 2014 #6

but key limes (or Mexican limes) are usually the cheapest and so commonly used in the area, I mostly buy them.

I have a nice potted lime tree with a ton of fruit on it this year, not sure what kind of lime - bigger regular sized fruits. I would like a lemon and a key lime too. Have to bring them in in winter is the main problem but when they bloom indoors the smell is wonderful!

Nothing is better than your own produce and seasonings .

I'm jealous, Kali, enjoy your limes!

do you pollinate them by hand with a small brush?

My father has two lemon trees, two orand trees, and a ruby red grapefruit tree at his winter home in Arizona. I planted grapefruit seeds in a pot and now have a 4' tall grapefruit tree. I don't know when it might blossom, but even if it does, I'm not expecting any fruit worth harvesting. It's more of an interesting project. We also have an Arizona palm tree grown from seeds from one of his trees. I have lemon seeds and Valencia ornge seeds, but that will have to be a project taken on by other family members.

On it's own, I prefer limes. But, they're not always the best thing to tart up a dish. Often, lemon is the better of the two, and lime just makes it taste weird. I recently made an avocado pasta sauce, which calls for lemon juice. It was good. It wouldn't have been so good had I used lime juice.

I make a dish with chicken and onions. I usually use lemon juice but discovered I was out, so I marinated the chicken with lime juice instead.

I guess I'll see if it comes out weird, worse or better.

Like both, so usually can substitute on some things. If I could grow anything tropical it would be a lime tree!

of the fact we eat so much Mexican food. OTOH, I can't stand lime with seafood, lemon wins there every time!

Generally I think of Lemons as more Mediterranean and Limes more Asian and Mexican. Since I tend to cook more Mediterranean Lemons usually have the edge in my kitchen.

But you can't make a decent guacamole without a juicy lime!

So my question.....Why must we choose? Both are wonderful
