The citrus cuts the sweetness of the soda and compliments the rum csziggy Dec 2014 #5

The coke in other parts of the world is often made with cane syrup instead of HFCS, and there seems to be a big difference.

I have always wanted to visit Cuban and I hope that can happen very soon and very easily.

Its the lime juice in the recipe that strikes my fancy, actually.

I went through a lot of rum. It can be made with Pepsi, but it's not the same. I think I even made some with RC Cola out of desperation.

By the way, for those looking for a better Coke - my husband brought home a six pack of "Coca Cola Life." The ones he bought are in 8 ounce glass bottles with green labels and caps. They are sweetened with cane sugar and Stevia - 60 calories per bottle.

He bought them as much to add to his bottle collection as to try the taste - but they've been here two weeks and he hasn't opened one. If he doesn't open them, they will be in his collection forever that way since I no longer drink sodas.

unless at a social event and ginger ale is available, and I only occasionally drink alcoholic anything, wine with dinner, so if I do this it will be a truly unique experience!

At least that is my memory - though it has been more decades than I'd like to count since I've had a Cuba Libre.

I stopped drinking after doing all too much of it one summer and didn't have anything alcoholic for about five years. At a wedding reception I got a drink - probably a Cuba Libre - and had a reaction that was almost like an allergic response. Since then I haven't had enough alcohol to do more than dampen my tongue. It no longer tastes at all good to me and the side effects are too unpleasant.
