What's for Dinner, Fri., Jan. 23, 2014

I'm making an interesting soup. It's called "Cabbage Roll Soup" and it's like stuffed cabbage rolls, only as a soup.

I had this head of cabbage that I came into, and I didn't know what to do with it, other than cole slaw. Wanted to try something different. I love stuffed cabbage rolls, but usually buy them from the Polish deli here. Read through the recipe and decided to try it.

What you do is put the cabbage roll sauce on the bottom of the slow cooker. Next up is the cabbage, shredded. On top of that, the ground beef and onion mixture. Pour beef stock over all this and put the slow-cooker setting on slow. I think I'm going to live dangerously and put it on high because I'd like to have this before tomorrow at 8 a.m.

Will be interesting to see how it comes out!

One food truck.

Around here, we have so many of them that they can command their own parking lots. At Rutgers they were known as the grease trucks.

However, yours sounds like it was far from a "grease truck."

cabbage soup, which is usually a variation on borscht. I am looking for a creamy cabbage soup and have been able to find nothing that suits my tastes. It would be something like leeky potato with cabbage. I just might have to invent this recipe. My sister (housemate) eats poultry/fish; I am a meat eater but don't eat fish, so we are trying to find common ground here. We will both eat turkey/chicken broth, which makes for great soup.

I made a killer minestrone last week with the last jar of home-canned tomatoes. It was a beautiful, delicious soup, but we won't get more until next summer when our tomatoes start producing.
