What's for Dinner, Sat., Sept. 26, 2015

Cup of broccoli-cheese soup as an appetizer.

Stuffed mushrooms (stuffed with crab).

I'm looking for a recipe for baked apples. That will be dessert.

I worked like a demon all day on cleaning out a storage shed, and am nowhere near finished. However, this doesn't bother me in the least, as I have made steady progress on organizing everything around here. I have my major closet totally cleaned out now, and is it ever nice to have that done.

I went to In-n-Out for a double-double and fries at lunch, and I'm still stuffed. (My once-a-year guilty pleasure.) So, a salad later on perhaps.

bacon wrapped 'little smokies' glazed with brown sugar and crostini toasted with sliced apples and sharp white cheddar. And a bottle of sarsaparilla.

We were out and about a bit today, finally got a replacement birdfeeder for the one that's been falling apart for some time, as well as picking up a couple of pumpkins from a local grower. I went with a 'modest' 30 lb'er in white, the housemate went with a traditional orange 40 lb. I'll wait until mid-October to carve my 'Bernie 2016' logo in mine so it doesn't rot away before Halloween. Still fighting the mice, a bit of smell alerted us that the trap under the kitchen cabinets had snared #4. Not sure how so many actually got inside the house, but it's probably that we've fallen into bad habits of leaving the door between the house and attached garage open while we have the dogs out in the back yard. But at least the new dog is letting us know when they've been trailing around, snuffling and snorting along their path.

I have a front screen door, and I like to leave it open for the light and the view. My cats sit in the front entryway, just waiting for a mouse to come along. At one time, bird seed was stored there, so the mice still drop by on occasion. These cats bring the mice in! Try explaining to cats that they have the procedure backwards.

So I ordered some of those no-kill traps from Amazon and they should be here Tues. I don't begrudge them their instinct for food, but I sure don't want them in my house. I think I only have one. One to many for me.

Imagine me driving this mouse down the street next week (if I'm successful).

Because I forget to check them, then remember weeks later that I had a baited no kill trap out, and go out to find some poor mouse or mice corpses in there, dead of dehydration. I figure the snap traps are at least usually a quick death. (Although I've caught a couple by tails or feet, in which case I let the poor little buggers out way back by the compost heap.)

But I'm pretty diligent. I have all sort of alarms, reminder systems, etc. In fact, I'm going to put this trap right on a counter, so there's no way I'm going to miss it.
