Related: About this forumI saw something new at farmers market today...
...where the vendor had starts of many plants.
A watermelon called Sun Moon and Stars, with speckled leaves -- yellow speckles on green. The seller told me that three colors of flesh are available, red, yellow, pink. And there are seeds, like old times.
I wish I had room to grow this!

I suppose every region thinks their watermelons are the best.

(36,827 posts)Other than the few things I keep going like herbs and peaches, I have nothing else this year. I have a couple of raised beds I didn't plant this year, nor did I start up my hydroponics setup.

(35,687 posts)If you can't grow out, grow up. I have bamboo growing behind my house, and recently cleared out the forest of poles. I'm giving them away for free on craigslist. Maybe someone in your area will be doing the same?
Yesterday I processed around 20 poles to grow cucumbers and beans. Only took me 14" to saw them all to the right size, which is about 11-12' tall.
I know this watermelon variety--I recall that I, too, was so struck by it that I had to look it up.

(50,130 posts)A ground floor flat in a hundred year old big house on the bank of a river. It is very beautiful, but I really can't do much more than pot gardening and flowers under my big picture window. This frustrates my green thumb, but it is what it is.

(2,674 posts)these are grown from heirloom seeds, I think originally from Russia. I'd love to see some at our local farmers' market.
Haven't bought any watermelons this year. Writing about watermelon makes me hungry for some. Nothing better than a chunk of sweet, ripe watermelon.
