Is a big Sunday Dinner still a Tradition?

It's just me and my husband at home now, but I still cook a big Sunday dinner. Right now, I have pork chops with corn and onions and candied sweet potatoes baking in the oven for our Sunday meal. I will add some Rice a Roni and big salad. I have my mixture for buttermilk cinnamon ice cream chilling in the fridge and we eat that with Mexican powder cookies.

When I was a kid, we'd always have a big Sunday dinner, My mother worked at a hospital, the afternoon shift, but she'd still find the time to make a big meal for Sunday and it just doesn't feel right if I don't make one.

Fried chicken, mashed potatoes with cream gravy and fresh green beans is my favorite for a Sunday meal. Sorry to say, we seldom eat fried chicken anymore, it is now baked or cooked on the grill. Even when I had kids at home and we were going everywhere, I'd still put a big dinner on the table on Sundays.

I love to make a cake for Sunday dinner. Cakes, especially layer cakes, are like putting on your Sunday clothes - something special.

I live alone, but having grown up with the "Sunday family Dinner", I still make a big meal on Sundays. I call it my "low and slow" day. Anything that requires slow simmering for hours. Either on the stovetop, or in the oven. A Texas chili, a red sauce w/ meatballs and sausage, any stew you can think of, a pork shoulder for pulled pork, a roast turkey, etc etc....

In fact, anytime I go grocery shopping, I ask the question "What do I want for the Sunday meal?" I do plan ahead for Sundays, usually. Yep - Sundays mean food!

but I think a big meal on Sunday is a great idea 'cuz there will be many items to have for the early part of the week, which is often very busy.

Yes, that is a good payoff for cooking a big Sunday meal, you have leftovers for the next few days,

the mid-day meal. There are usually 8 of us: my sister and me, my brother and his wife, and their daughter, her husband and 2 children. We have a lot of food and share the news of the week. Today, we had kielbasa sausages with peppers and onions, buttered red potatoes, roasted cauliflower, green beans and cucumber/tomato salad. I made a big pan of biscuits and we had 3 kinds of pie for dessert. It was a birthday dinner for my sister-in-law who will be turning 60 this week. I made a coconut custard pie and a chocolate pie. My nephew, who is 9 yrs. old, made a chocolate pudding pie with oreo topping. The leftovers are divided between the families.

Like you, dem, we don't have fried chicken very often. Nowadays, it's usually grilled. We were thinking the other day that we needed to do a fried chicken dinner once the weather gets cooler.

We don't eat like this all the time, but it's nice to get together one day a week and enjoy being a family. It's like you said...something special.

but that fell away many years ago.

I lived on my own for more than a decade before I married. When I tried to do the Sunday dinner thing, my husband, who had not grown up with it, didn't care for it. So I never re-established the habit. I'm now divorced, living on my own again, and (needless to say) I don't do a big Sunday dinner these days.

I did like the tradition, and sort of miss it.

ham and roast, 3 casseroles, veggies, rolls...tea

We usually do these for people's birthdays.

In my house, Sunday is a good grilling night. Otherwise, it's a regular dinner to end/start the week.

We're back to just the two of us. We have a big brunch with meat, eggs and potatoes around 11:30 AM. We either get take out or go out for a burger around 5 PM.
