Black-Eyed Peas - A Southern Tradition for New Year's Day

I wouldn't dream of starting off 2017 without eating black-eyed peas on New Year's day. I cooked the dry peas in my crock pot, simmered on low all night with a meaty hunk of ham hock. Went all Southern, served with pan fried chicken, baked sweet potatoes and apple and carrot coleslaw. Made a banana pudding for dessert.

My grandmother was from Texas and made sure we had them every New Year's Day. I hadn't had them in years and decided this year it was time again that I did. Couldn't hurt...

pulled a bag of those out and cooked them with onions, bell peppers, bay leaf, and a little smoked salt, lots of black pepper. We had the other good luck stuff, too. Sauteed, mixed greens, some smoked pulled pork, rice, cornbread, braised parmesan carrots. For dessert, I poached a few pears in orange juice/honey with vanilla and cinnamon.

my son made the cornbread and that was a first. He loves cooking in an iron skillet now.

One day of good luck for each pea.
Be sure to eat at least 365.

Collards greens for money to come in the new year.
