I wouldn't dream of starting off 2017 without eating black-eyed peas on New Year's day. I cooked the dry peas in my crock pot, simmered on low all night with a meaty hunk of ham hock. Went all Southern, served with pan fried chicken, baked sweet potatoes and apple and carrot coleslaw. Made a banana pudding for dessert.

(8,310 posts)My grandmother was from Texas and made sure we had them every New Year's Day. I hadn't had them in years and decided this year it was time again that I did. Couldn't hurt...

(9,833 posts)pulled a bag of those out and cooked them with onions, bell peppers, bay leaf, and a little smoked salt, lots of black pepper. We had the other good luck stuff, too. Sauteed, mixed greens, some smoked pulled pork, rice, cornbread, braised parmesan carrots. For dessert, I poached a few pears in orange juice/honey with vanilla and cinnamon.
