Is when the judges say their dish's ingredients don't go together. No shit Sherlock you picked things for our basket that DON'T go together.

(182,823 posts)One I knew a long time ago. Nice guy but he made a complete ass of himself on the show. First season I think.
The second was more recent. They don't pay for travel or lodging. The shoot from 7am until about 7pm so that's two nights in a NYC hotel - unless you know so,one who lives there. So the $10,000 is less taxes and travel/lodging. The one they have to decide on what to do when they open the basket is about the same amount of time it takes for the host to name the ingredients.

(42,770 posts)It is just immensely absurd that they have no time to think about the ingredients and to me, an amateur chef, adds absolutely zero to the outcome of who is the best chef. Spam, Trix, olives, marshmallows and sardines. WTF. What does putting that mismash together say about a chef? At least Iron Chef just mandates one common ingredient, right?, like Shrimp.
The one I watched today was for $50k. But get the point.

(844 posts)Its wild to imagine how some big time chefs lose in the last round and end up cursing some weirdo ingredient the rest of their life.

(16,334 posts)It's true. I used to watch it a lot because it seems like it was on every time I checked that channel. Now I have to be really bored to sit through it. I was always impressed with anything they could come up with that fast with such crap ingredients. But, yes, I remember the times when they'd say something like "You just didn't change the gummy worm candy enough"

(14,889 posts)The chefs know what the show is all about and I suspect most are there more for bragging rights than the money, although the cash is a great incentive.
The premise of the show is to transform the ingredients, no matter how disgusting they are. I am truly amazed at what they come up with in that short allotted amount of time.
Frankly, I can't imagine why anyone would want to put themselves through such an ordeal, but I think most chefs are very competitive people.
And to me they are all winners.
