What's for Dinner, Sun., July 8, 2018

Making a salad with this kohlrabi I grew!

It is called "mandolin salad" because everything is shaved with the mandolin: fennel, radishes, cucumber, and a little cauliflower.

The dressing is olive oil and muscatel.

I grew this at my plot at the community garden because the sun is better over there.

The cookbook from which I got the recipe is called On the Side by Ed Smith. It has color pictures to go with every recipe.

Possibly garlic toast.

I'm making dinner.

The porch pot tomatoes are about 1 day from harvesting the first ones.

some green beans - haven't decided how to dress them.

There was fennel at the Farmers Market yesterday and I almost bought some but wasn't sure how I'd use it.

...but I do own and love my mandolin!
We are getting Chinese tonight from Ginger & Garlic (the good place down the road). I'm in a chow mei fun mood. Later I'll scarf down some Jelly Belly Sours.

crumbles, sliced tomatoes from the garden, yeast horn rolls and brownie sundaes w/pecans, chocolate and a cherry on top.

Kids back from vacation and are hungry for a home-cooked meal. Not impressed with the food on the road.

Or anybody, for that matter!

I like the idea of the soy-based garlic crust. Yum, will suggest it to the RG. He loves to make pork roasts.

I am at the planning stage

Remnants of yesterday's salad. The cuke and bell peppers are so good! Will add (or side) some things, cottage cheese, olives, deli ham, coleslaw, pickles ... not sure, I will take a look around.

Afterwards I'll have blueberries and vanilla ice cream if there is any left. If that fails, I see TJ has laid in a bunch of different cookies, so tea and biscuits (cookies in America) will be the stand by.

I am posting earlier than usual so FLFC is again unavailable due to his affinity for sleep in TJ's bed. They will arise 8ish and I will add his menu and any comments he has to this post if of interest. I am overjoyed at his improvement in the last five days. He goes back to the orthopedic surgeon on Friday the 13th. I've never had bad luck on Friday the 13th.

We grew a row of kohlrabi and were ignorant of the proper picking. We let it grow too long, to the point where it was not edible. Jeanne, AJ and I decided that the best recipe was soak in brine 1 week, simmer in fresh water 24 hours, and then chop up and place in the compost pile. Gosh, that must have been around 1973. I miss them.

+++++++

FLFC awoke and complained in TJ's bed and was removed so TJ could continue sleeping. He did his business and came into the kitchen soliciting dinner. He did not want to discuss a menu. "Gimme Eats," is what he said. Roast chicken was served and eaten. Just two paws up because there was no dark meat. He went back into TJ's room and woke her up to get in bed. I guess we would call tonight's dinner a tactical one. Less than 15 minutes out of bed. He has his priorities.

My grandma grew it in her garden when I was a child. Your salads sound wonderful.

Tonight I am frying up some Lake Erie perch that my husband caught. Also made corn bread and Cole slaw and homemade tartar sauce.

Sautéed a pan of veggies: kale, tomatoes, summer squash, added onion and garlic, salt, pepper, turmeric, topped with feta crumbles. Homemade slice of zucchini bread on the side. Small bowl of blueberries and cream for dessert.

Your kohlrabi looks beautiful.
