I have recently been hired to train as a cashier for an upscale grocery store. It specializes in fresh everything: produce, meat, poultry, seafood, etc. All you really have to do is scan and data entry. And be solicitous to customers while doing to other two job duties.
I worked two days ago, Labor Day Saturday. It was all I could do to keep my eyes from bugging out. There were orders with 5-6 porterhouse steaks, three supersize ribs, etc., with totals going over $300. I'd say every other customer was $200 or $300.
It was a parade of customers: for three hours, ALL cashier aisles had 2-3 baskets waiting and there are almost 20 cashiers.
Part of me wondered what it's like to have that kind of money for one day of grilling. Another part of me was envious. Another part of me mused how I have to wait until dates like Labor Day to afford ONE item like a pork shoulder to drop to 99 cents a pound to indulge in meat.

(9,265 posts)Fancy upscale grocery. I know the stuff is high quality and some of it is worth it. Even though DH and I arent as poor as we used to be, I cant do it. I read where the trend in food shopping will be upscale/organic (Whole Foods etc) or Walmart with nothing in between, the regular supermarket is dying. Please dear god no. Hate food shopping at Walmart and love my local Giant.

(2,302 posts)It's pretty nice, in my opinion, for a "regular" grocery store. We also have Fresh Market, which is a fancier store. When my organic daughter visits we go there for good produce and fish. A market called Earth Fare recently opened, and they carry nothing with artificial ingredients. I recently got some king crab (my fave) there at a great price.
My son and his fiancé live in Boynton Beach and are staying with a friend in Delray until the thing is done. They like Publix (they are everywhere down there) and do most of their shopping there.

(13,895 posts)I'm fortunate to be between two of the republican loving Publix in my neighborhood. I'm also reasonably close to Whole foods, Trader Joes and Lucky's market. I like Lucky's as they have most of the things WF and FM have and at a better price...
A friend said when he was looking for a home he plotted out the WF/FM/TJ and Total Wine stores were located. They most often put the stores in nice neighborhoods!!!
Talk about obtuse thinking..

(10,136 posts)and for special occasions I will splurge on the more expensive cuts. A prime rib roast - even though it does cost the big bucks - will serve my household for several meals, not including Yorkshire pudding from the drippings and soup from the bones. For all I know the people with the expensive orders are planning a special event and don't eat like this every day. Or maybe they do - but that's not my problem.
I haven't seen pork shoulder in my neck of the woods for $.99 in I don't know how long. And back in the days when I was a cashier I used to wonder about the weird things people bought, and make up stories about them to amuse myself.
