What's happening with our pinned threads?

Did we decide on how to organize it?

The corn on the cob video reminded me we need a how-to section for things like that plus peeling garlic, working with yeast, whipping cream, making a meringue, etc. Tips & Hints sort of thing.

but there has been limited input and no agreement as to how best to organize those threads.

At one point I posted a series of threads (seven I believe) that were pinned and sequentially deleted in order for folks here to have some idea of how multiple pinned threads would look. There was minimal response to that effort.

The initial proposal was to have two permanently pinned threads. The first for resources and the second for recipes. Nested sub-threads within the resource thread might include (1) links to cooking blogs and websites, (2) a cooks reference and tips, (3) kitchen design and equipment reviews, etc. Nested sub-threads within the recipe thread could divided into: (1) soups, salads, sandwiches, main dishes, (2) appetizers, side dishes, beverages, cocktails, snacks, (3) breads and baked items; and (4) desserts.

There was some discussion regarding vegetarian and vegan recipes. I have contacted the hosts of the animal rights, vegetarian and vegan group and they have agreed to have a single pinned vegetarian and vegan recipe thread that is shared by the two groups - assuming that the admins are willing to implement the functionality to make such a thread possible.

Some have expressed concern about using nested threads due to the really slow load time that those threads can cause.

From my perspective, for us to go forward with implementing pinned threads we need some input and agreement regarding the following issues:
(1) Do we want to use nested threads?
(2) How many permanently pinned threads do we want to have posted?
(3) What do we want those pinned threads to contain? Just recipes or additional information and links?
(4) Do we want to post all recipes in a single pinned thread or do we want to have nested or multiple threads which sub-divide recipes into categories? And if we sub-divide recipes, how do we want to do that?
(5) Do we want to post and include vegetarian and vegan recipes? Or do we want to try to implement a shared thread with the animal rights group?

There likely are some more issues that don't immediately come to mind.

I welcome and solicit comments and input regarding pinned threads.

On a personal note I have been away from DU quite a bit since mid-February or so. I traveled to a wedding when my brother's widow remarried. I took Dad to see one of his older his brothers. About a week later we traveled back for his funeral. I had a nasty bout of stomach flu. The old dog has become a renal failure dog and is not doing well. I've had a couple of big projects with deadlines. I'm hoping things will quiet down a bit for awhile.

I guess I didn't realize we had an official project going on. Was just wondering where we were going with it after seeing the corn on the cob hint.

I think this concern can be addressed by using sub-threads. We would only need to have two pinned threads. The first could be for resources with the second being our recipe thread. Sub-threads within the resource thread might include (1) links to cooking blogs and websites, (2) a cooks reference, (3) equipment reviews, etc. The recipe thread could be sub-divided any number of ways. If space for sub-threads were not an issue I might suggest the following sub-threads: (1) appetizers, (2) soups, (3) salads, (4) main dishes, (5) side dishes, (6) desserts and snack items, (7) breads, (8) beverages and cocktails, (9) miscellaneous including condiments, mixes, food preparation, etc. I intuitively organize and search for recipes using these categories and except to find a variety of preparation methods, ingredients and cuisine within each category. Your mileage may vary.

Maybe we can start with just one Helpful Hints Thread Pinned to the top.

Sometimes you just need to start somewhere with something simple. It can always morph into something else later.

That technique I learned of here, where you put the unpeeled cloves in two bowls and shake the scheiß out of them, I told to my friends that run a cafe. They can't tell me how much time it's saved them

but I think of Alton and his one-use gadget rule. Most people already have two bowls, so why buy something else?

Glad to hear a tip has paid off!

is to make sure they are lightweight bowls! I only have one stainless bowl while the others are Pyrex. I've used the technique even with one glass and one stainless, but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone unless they have good strength and endurance!

I'm going to have to show the technique to my father, whether they use a lot of garlic or not. Or I'll just send him the video

It is a little like magic.

For smaller amounts of garlic, I don't peel, I mash and then the peel just slips off.
