Tomatoes!

I’m so excited! Spotted these today while watering:

They are the first to appear. I cannot wait to slice and to taste those giant, beautiful, delicious Brandywines. It’s been about 5 years since I’ve grown any. Got red and pink (my fav) going, plus yellow pear and Cherokee purple.

Woohoo!! 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅

I’ve been getting by on Campari tomatoes from the grocery store for way too long.

(and I ain’t touching the “love” part, lol! Other than to say I am enjoying being single again.)

In 2017, the spring weather in Northern Virginia was just right and our tomato plants set a LOT of fruit. We ended up harvesting over 200 lbs of heirloom tomatoes from that crop, we were canning tomatoes almost every night that summer.

Enjoy those lovely Brandywines.

the seed directly descends from Ben Quisenberry, who got it from the Sudduth family. Really top 5 flavor, and I've grown and tasted thousands of varieties

Wow! That’s a lot of tomatoes! Sounds like heaven.

It looks like it’s going to be a good year! After all that rain, my plants grew several inches (no kidding) in a single day. I came home from work and stood there, looking at them, with my jaw dropped.

Cherokee Purple!!!

I've got flowers all over my plants too. Got 24 of my favorites in strawbales, another 80 or so in grow bags.

Last time I could garden, critters ate my first batch of tomato plants including the Cherokee purple. When I went to get more plants (and hardware mesh to build protective cages), they were all sold out of that variety.

I’m really looking forward to seeing the color and to tasting them!

being sent the seed (as an unnamed variety) back in 1990, giving it its name, sending it to the right seed company to give it the debut...I am just shocked at how popular it is now!

If you ever want to try Cherokee Chocolate (which came from Purple), and Cherokee Green (which came from Chocolate) - just ask - I am happy to send seeds!

At least it’s early, with plenty of time for it to recover. We’ve had a couple hard, heavy rains the past week but, thankfully, no hail.

I don't garden anymore, but I used to grow the old varieties. I'd put out some Brandywines every year. They are iffy in Texas, if it turns hot too soon, they won't set fruit. But when they did make it was Tomato Heaven!
