What can I do with a can of sweetened condensed milk?

I just opened a can of sweetened condensed milk, thinking it was a can of evaporated milk. I don’t even know why I had such a thing in my pantry because I haven’t a clue what to do with it, but now I have to use it for something.

You can add thin organic lime slices and fresh whipped cream, but I prefer it plain.

My next step in baking is to bake my own graham cracker pie crust. I usually just buy one.

I used to bake this pie for family get togethers in the before time. I also make it as a birthday pie for several of my friends.

It’s the only Key Lime pie that I eat, unless J’m in the Florida Keys. I first had Key Lime pie in the mid 1970s at the 7 Mile Grill down in the Keys. Yum!

only they used mixed cookies for the crust. They come in a 11/4 pound paper bag. The crust stays crisper.

Similar to Key Lime, but with crust made of Saltine crackers and uses lemons instead of limes. I like it better than key lime pie as the lemons are more tart than the limes. Also if you have an ice cream maker, condensed milk makes great ice cream.

Also can make Cajeta with is thick caramel milk sauce. Great when spread on crepes which are then rolled up, topped with whipped cream, toasted pecans and sliced strawberries.

Most recipes for making cajeta call for the condensed milk to be simmered on low in a double boiler. I like to make it by placing the unopened can of condensed milk in my slow cooker, cover with water and cook for 2 to 3 hours, turning can over once while cooking. Great when served with fresh apple slices or thinned down and spread on sheet cake.

All these recipes can be found on the internet.

Simple as can be, coconut, condensed milk and stiffly beaten egg whites, bake in slow oven, about 275 degrees, on parchment paper. Takes about 30 to 40 minutes to bake them. Store in cookie tins and let stand a week or so. always make at Christmas.

I found this recipe in my old Joy of Cooking, also in one of Emeril Lagasse's cookbooks.

It's think it's easier to submerge the unopened can in hot water, periodically making sure it remains covered with water to avoid explosions.

So I've never tried this method with a baking sheet:

And then I submerged them in water in my InstantPot set on slow cook for four hours. It made caramel and the jars are sealed, so I can store the caramel in the pantry for future reference.

If you drink coffee or tea you can use it as a creamer. It's also used in a variety of baked goods. Some people mix it in ice cream. There's also Dulce de Leche.

a particular Nova Scotia twist.

It is the comfort munchie food in the canadian maritimes. Great dipping sauce too.

INGREDIENTS

10 oz (300 ml) sweetened condensed milk
1/4 cup vinegar
1/2 tsp garlic powder

INSTRUCTIONS

Stir together all ingredients until thick. You might find that stirring it with a fork works best or you can use a stand mixer or electric mixer. You can use this right away but it tastes the best if it sits overnight in the fridge.Use as a topping for East Coast Canadian Halifax Donairs or garlic fingers!

Tres Leches Cake

This is a beautiful cake, it's rich, delicious and always gets lots of appreciative comments. I usually cut the unfrosted cake in half and freeze one for later. Arrange all the ingredients miss en place to get through all the steps quickly.

Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 1/2 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
5 eggs (large)
1 cup sugar divided into 3/4 and 1/4 cups
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/3 cup whole milk

Syrup:
12 oz evaporated milk
9 oz sweetened condensed milk (2/3 of a 14 oz can)
1/3 cup heavy whipping cream

Frosting:
2 cups heavy whipping cream
2 Tbsp granulated sugar
1 cup berries to garnish, optional

Preheat oven to 350°F and butter a casserole dish.
Set up 3 mixing bowls.

Sift the dry ingredients into the first bowl.
Separate egg whites and yolks into the other 2 bowls.
Using an electric hand mixer beat yolks with 3/4 cup sugar on high speed, until pale yellow (2 min).
Stir in 1/3 cup milk and vanilla.
With clean and dry egg beaters, beat whites on high speed until soft peaks form (1 min).
With the mixer on, add remaining 1/4 cup sugar and beat on high speed until whites are stiff but not dry (1 min).
Pour egg yolk mixture over the flour mixture and use a spatula to blend together.
Gently fold in egg white mixture until just combined.
Pour batter into prepared casserole and bake 30-35 minutes.
When the cake has cooled, pierce all over with a fork and slowly drizzle on the 3-milks mixture.
7Let rest 30 minutes then top with whipped cream and berries.
