Cooking & Baking

True confession, I love spam. It's so versatile, and on those days when you're tired, under the weather or just don't want to cook a full meal, Spam rescue me.
Quick eggs (any style) and crispy fried Spam. Serve a la cart or on a toasted English muffin with gooey, melty cheese. It's also tasty served open face on hot waffles.
Spam Reuben sandwich brown slices of Spam add to toasty rye bread with sauerkraut and Swiss cheese.
Spam quesadilla with crispy fried strips of Spam, onions, assorted peppers, tomatoes and lots of cheese. Serve with salsa of choice and a bit of sour cream on the side.
Bagels and spam. Toasty bagels, cream cheese and a slice of grilled Spam... Yummy.
Use up leftovers: cooked rice or potatoes, cubed Spam and mixed veggies. Just heat and serve. Cooked ramen noodles, diced Spam and broccoli florets.
Mix cubed Spam into that boring box of Mac and Cheese, stir in some salsa and all is good.
Simple and fast, Spam and beans. Choose a can of beans (I like BBQ) add cubed Spam and heat to serve.
Anyone else secretly harboring a desire for Spam?

(15,805 posts)But not our mom, she wouldn't even cook it, so pops served all the spam we wanted. He specialized in breakfast and sandwiches.

(13,200 posts)Although we were a little below the Spam demographic for a few years when I was a kid.
Any Spam haters out there should be forced to sample Treat and some other Spam replacements
Anyway - Run a can of Spam through a grater and add to 6 Eggs and a cup each of diced peppers & onions and serve over toast for a great (Cheap) scramble.
You can feed 6 people for $8, and it tastes good too

(15,805 posts)Maybe I'd throw in some crispy tater tots. That should cover all the major food groups... Right?

(13,200 posts)May break the $8 barrier though

(9,353 posts)Every once in a while I get that hankering.
Same thing with Taylor Pork Roll.
Nothing better than a greasy, fried slab of one of those on a slice of white bread.

But they'll be back. Spam is very popular in Hawaii and among Asian Pacific islanders in general.
In fact, Salon magazine published a story today about Spam:

(33,035 posts)I use this recipe-https://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2016/04/kimchi-spam-fried-rice-recipe.html
Jasmine rice is my major grain, so I make a pot several times a week and have it on hand for fried rice.

(4,221 posts)Loved it. But it had to be thin slices and fried crispy like bacon. I havent had that in years.
procon
(15,805 posts)Start cooking the Spam while you do the eggs and adds one and they will all finish together. Thin slices are the key, make lots of 'em for a big Spam Sammy later.

(9,275 posts)Love to find new uses for the air fryer. Air fryer makes good hot dogs too, gets the outsides nice and brown and a little crispy.
You know how there have been spot shortages of things at the grocery store, I had a hankering for Spam and my local Giant was all out of it except some weird variety (turkey?) I was not going to try.

(111,367 posts)The thinly sliced, fried Spam sandwich is lovely. The Spam fried rice is great. The Spam in egg foo yung is terrific. By the time I get to the last bit in the can, I never want to see it again as long as I live.
Funny stuff.
I might be about due for another can sometime this year.

Here he is explaining it to Anderson Cooper. I know that my students who came from the Philippines loved Spam. The US troops who are in their country introduced Spam a long time ago.

(6,253 posts)We've cook up the 10 cent package of store brand mac and cheese, and bake a full can of Spam, scored in diamond shapes, studded with cloves, and covered in a brown sugar and mustard sauce.
