Furball and Company update

Worst first - Radar has developed a condition that is either a nerve sheath tumor or a slightly atypical disc problem. He's too old and fragile for treating either, in our opinion, so we're treating symptoms to give him as good a quality of life as possible for as long as possible. It's all about pain control and encouraging appetite. His current diet is half canned dog food, half mashed potatoes, his tablet meds crushed in it, warmed, and drizzled with evaporated milk. It's what he'll eat, along with any human food he wants that won't actually harm him. He's now comfortable and putting on a little weight at last, although he's still unsteady on his feet. This isn't likely to go away. And we've made the only decision possible, that we're not going to keep him alive past this period just to keep us happy. Shit.

Audrey is starting to lay against him to sleep. He tolerates this in a way he hasn't before. She's developing some other ways of fitting into the household, choosing to sleep at night snuggled into my belly. (I'm a side sleeper.) She's taught all of the other animals, including Radar, that booping is the way to get pets. We now get nagged for pets by four animals, making it pretty constant.

Fast Eddie is becoming slightly more social as well. We now have mornings with all four animals in the bed and no complaints. This wasn't exactly a given at the beginning. And Belle is still a juvenile nutty adventure - DH calls her a juvenile deliquent, but she's his favorite.

They really should live longer.

I can't tell you how many times I've said that. I hope your Radar hangs in there.

I know how it feels... went through a lot of angst, tears, and grief when I had to let my border collie go to the Rainbow. I still miss him so much... some days he's on my mind even more than others. I hope Radar stays pain free ...and if they find something good for him, let us chronic pain sufferers here know... we might be able to use some form of it! ...

Enjoy the head boops and all the loving... I've got 8 here of various ages (from 3 to very old age) who learned long ago Mom will do anything for head boops!
