Related: About this forumThere is vomiting and there is regurgitation. (WARNING: Bodily Fluids Discussion)
So, as you may know, our GSD was to the vet for gut issues. She appears to be on the mend and is ravenously eating the boiled rice and ground turkey she is getting for the next few days.
Meanwhile, our alpha/senior Border Collie chucked up an entire meal minutes after eating (inhaling/gobbling/scarfing) it down. Another vet check (ouch).
Not to worry. Vomiting and regurgitation are two different things from very different causes.
Vomiting is involuntary and caused by an abnormality. It usually means the dog is ill.
Regurgitating is voluntary (probably more semi-voluntary) and is caused usually by eating too fast, gulping air as they eat, or something similar. It starts in the esophagus, not the gut. It is not usually a sign of illness (that is not to say it can't be). Also, dogs will sometimes reingest that regurgitation because they're still hungry.
I guess with the GSD having been ill, we're hyper vigilant right now. It isn't like this is the first time we saw one of the dogs regurgitate. Just the first time we looked seriously into the cause.

(39,345 posts)It's definitely a case of Sid eating too fast, too much. But unfortunately, he doesn't go back and eat it. I have to clean it up.

(9,267 posts)My late Pookie would do that, gobble his food ravenously and often quickly barf it back up, plus he was losing weight. He had over active thyroid, common in cats especially as they get older. Pills fixed him up for quite a while.

He wants to get to the feeder before she does when it runs out and Oh My, I left it EMPTY(!) overnight.
They have a common dry food feeder, but I give them all their wet food separately.
I make sure she eats or at least has the food to herself during the day.

I hope this is nothing to be concerned about. I know how it is when you are on heightened alert.

(9,494 posts)it slows them down. They use similar bowls to feed litters of puppies. Because most of my clients and my 3 dogs are small. I use my collection of antique lemon juice dishes.

(3,702 posts)We were visiting my uncle and his dog, and the dogs played in the backyard for hours. I fed them, and our GSD got sick right away. Now we know no food before long car rides or after play sessions.
