either because you haven't had it long enough, or it's afraid of being punished, or it's not your dog but you need to catch it for someone - when all else fails, kneel and call it to you. Slowly, it will come (if no one psychs it).

I don't remember how I learned this, either by accident or someone told me, but it usually works.

Thanks for the picture...

5. When one of my chows got loose

And took off on a cross country run, she kept looping back to me, then dancing just out of reach before I could grab her. So finally I pretended to fall, screamed in pretend agony, and lay on my back bawling like a baby. That concerned her, so she dashed over to lick my face and comfort me - which is when I grabbed her collar, slapped on a leash, and marched her back home.

That sort of ruse won't work more than once, however.

BTW I used to explain to visitors that they should not place themselves between the chows and me because the dogs perceived that as potential danger to Mom.

my whole life. Who knew! I did know some of these things were no-nos, but I have always bent down and put my hand in a fist and put it below the dog's head to see if they wanted to greet me. Damn. I fit into the #1 picture.
