Firefighters use oxygen mask and IV to save dog

BOISE -- Boise firefighters saved a hot dog while making a medical call for its elderly owner.

Firefighters responded to find an elderly woman had passed away in her apartment in northwest Boise. Meanwhile, her pug dog had been without water for several days, outside in hot temperatures.

Authorities said the dog, named 'Berny,' seemed to be gasping for air and convulsing, so they administered oxygen and started him on an IV.

Animal control was called and he was taken to the Idaho Humane Society. The veterinarian at the humane society and family of the owner believe Berny is going to be okay.

Poor dog and poor lady. So glad the firefighters helped the dog. It's always sad when animals end up in shelters because their owners die or have to go to nursing homes. I wish we could do better for them.

I keep thinking "where were the neighbors?" Are we so insulated from each other that no one notices a dog outside for days without water? How sad.

So glad that they got there when they did. And that they made the effort to save the dog. Bravo!

Maybe she lived in a somewhat isolated house that neighbors wouldn't know if the dog was in the yard or not? That led me to wondering how she lay dead in her home for three days without anyone in her family having checked on her with a visit or a phone call.

The whole story makes my heart hurt, but at least the poor doggie is expected to be ok.

That has been my fear for years, that I would die and no one would find me, although I don't know why I would care at that point. But all of my family is states away, and I don't talk to any friends or neighbors daily. I do tell my neighbors that if I do not leave the house in the morning for work, to make sure I am ok---but no one ever has, so I don't expect it. My hopes are on the mailman, I guess.
