short video of Yoshi playing in the snow with his lobster

Last edited Mon Dec 23, 2013, 07:17 PM - Edit history (1)

More than half the snow had melted by the time I took this, and it was around 16 degrees, so I couldn't stand to keep filming more than I did because it was so cold and window (and I was only wearing my jammies at the time). This was Yoshi's first experience with real snow since the two winters past since he's been alive we never got anything more than a dusting. Most of the snow in our yard went missing long before everyone else's, too, because he trampled half and ate the other half.

By the way, he doesn't fit in that dog house. A neighbor gave it to me when I first moved in since they were going to throw it away, but I like having it so people of nefarious character know a big dog lives in my house, and I discovered it makes a really convenient place to stash his bagged doodies from the yard until trash day so they don't get rained on or snowed on.

On Edit: Forgot to mention all that background noise is rush hour traffic. I'm so surprised it sounds so damn loud on the video because it doesn't in real life except for the 18 wheelers at around 4 or 5 a.m. gearing down for the light right where our little street meets the major road.

He jumps around in it like a deer, buries his nose in it and then looks back at us like "Thank you for making this wonderful stuff just for ME!!!"

He is absolutely adorable playing with his lobster. My Border Collie would have it totally destroyed with stuffing everywhere in minutes, so we can't give her cute toys like that.

I bet he's good to cuddle up to when it's cold.

The medium sized one they don't make anymore. All the other covers I made for his three big wiggly giggly balls. There's only stuffing in the tail and the claws and a little bit to round out the face. When I first made it though he did tear apart the tail and pulled out stuffing, but then he finally got the idea that it was a lot more fun to fling them around so the balls made the giggle noise.

I gave him his Christmas presents early (well, he found them where I'd hid them so I guess you could say that he decided to have his presents early regardless of what my plans were... haha!). One of them was a big stuffed bear that I'm sure will be disemboweled and nothing but a soggy slobbery lump of material in the next couple of days with the house decorated with bunches of slobbery stuffing. I also got him a big squishy stuffed dog bed, but he doesn't lay down on it. He actually put the bear in the bed and slept on the floor beside both of them. He likes climbing all over the bed, but he hasn't figured out it's for resting and sleeping. I thought he'd like to sleep on the bed since he always balls up his binkie and sleeps on top of the binkie lump. Most of the time he sleeps on the floor though and usually prefers tile rather than carpet.

The only time Layla will sleep on a dog bed is when it is in her X-pen at agility trials. She curls into a tight little ball on the couch.

Dogs are wonderful!

4. he never gets cold

Cold is his element with that thick double coat. It's so insulating that if snow piles up on his head and back while it's coming out of the sky it doesn't melt, and he just shakes it off and is still dry. It doesn't melt from underneath him either. He spent hours sleeping in it. The only thing that might get cold is his nose, so sometimes he curls in a ball, straightens his curly tail and sticks his nose in his tail fur. It's warm weather he's not fond of. I always worry so much in the summer that he's too warm, but he never seems much effected by the heat in the summer. I just make it a strict rule that we do our walks long after the sun goes down during the warm seasons. More interesting and abundant critters come out at night anyway.

I really think we ended up with only about half the snow in our yard than everyone else had because he eats it. When we went out walking I thought he had his nose to the ground most of the time because he was on the scent of some critter, but on closer inspection it was because he was dragging his tongue through the snow leaving long tongue trails behind him.

He also got to learn the concept of snowballs though they baffled him since they disintegrate on impact. He never figured out how to catch toys in his mouth that are thrown for him and just lets them hit the ground or even bounce off his face instead of catching them. He got really confused when every snowball that landed right at his feet mysteriously disappeared though he'd hunt for them.

Shoveling snow is not at all a concept he's grasped. Boo used to love it when I'd throw the shovelfuls of snow right at him, and he'd dive into the flying lumps, but Yoshi always wants to climb right into the shovel scoop. I finally had to put him in the house just to get the steps and walkway done.

Your dog is beautiful and enjoys it . I could never have such a beautiful baby here. He looks like he loves the snow! My Doberman didn't much care for anything to do with rain or winter, either LOL.
