Animal Care Services Incorporates Facial Recognition Technology
Lost dog or cat?
There's an app for that.
Animal Care Services will integrate a new facial recognition tool called Finding Rover.
Users of the app take a photo of their beloved pet and upload it into a free database. If a registered pet is lost, the app will search local shelters for a match.
"Finding Rover enables neighbors to easily return lost pets directly to their owners, or to find pets quicker if they come to our facility," ACS director Kathy Davis says in a press release. "The number of lost dogs entering our shelter, or the time period until they find their way home, could be significantly reduced with this technology."
If 20,000 community members sign up before July 4, the Petco Foundation will award ACS a $20,000 grant.
"By signing up your pet today in Finding Rover, you can be prepared should your pet ever get lost. With widespread use, Finding Rover's high tech features could transform the way lost pets find their way home," Petco Foundation Executive Director Susanne Kogut says in a press release. "The benefit to the community, its pets and our animal welfare organizations could be significant."
