Meet Cagney.

[img][/img]

He's a floofy tailed little stinker.

And by stinker, I mean stinker.

He enjoys urinating in his litter box (THANK GOD)

But he prefers to poop in the hall way of the litter box instead. (DAMN IT)

We have just bought 2 litterboxes and placed one in the spot where he normally leaves leavings.

Annnnd, it didn't work. He urinates in it. But poops beside it.

WHAT DO WE DO?

I don't know what you should do, but I'm pretty sure someone in this group will have a solution. Smart pet lovers here.

I don't mean fat, I mean just large, a big boy? I have found that litter boxes tend to be too small for my male cats. They like to have room for their tail to be vertically extended while they urinate, so that rules out every covered litter box I've seen. & the boxes sold are so small, I frankly can't imagine either of them squatting in a regular box without pooping over the side.
We use plastic container boxes, usually something like 2 feet by 18 inches by 18 inches. An entrance can be cut into the side of the plastic if necessary.
So that's my thought- maybe a bigger box, tucked away somewhere private like a back room or under the stairs?

but you might try Cat Attract litter at least until he starts pooping in the box.

PS He is a gorgeous guy and I hope he will get with the program soon. Best of luck to you and Cagney.

And they prefer the fine stuff.

It needs to be plenty deep also.

Out in the open poopers are typically expressing unhappiness with something - maybe it's uncomfortable to poop in the litter box, or being a longish-hair cat, his poop is sticking to his butt fur or tail instead of being able to be eliminated totally in the box. I have a longish-hair cat who sometimes has problems finishing her elimination, and will be dropping rather large " brown buttons" for a good 15 ft until it all clears off her backside.

Clothes/bedding poopers or carpet poopers who hide their poop are looking for some place that will cover it better than the current litter box is capable of doing so. Either they don't like the litter-box, don't like a dirty litter-box, or they don't think it covers up their poop well enough.

As one poster above indicates "Cat Attract", though expensive, will usually take care of litter box protests. Having a deeper box with much more than the recommended inch helps with the "cover the poop" issue.

Can't help you with a brown button problem; but diet might help.

Who occasionally had "stuck poop" issues due to the long hair. A bath in the sink, *major* yuck. I loved them dearly but between that and the hair mats (the female had to get a couple lion cuts) and the hairballs, no more long-haired cats. Since they've gone to the Bridge we've only had "regular" cats.
All excellent suggestions about the type of box and litter. I use lift-and-sift boxes for our 2 boys. Sift them daily and add more clumping litter (unscented) as needed. No issues so far.

9. Put his poop in the box for him and cover it?

I dunno, seems like maybe that would help give him a clue

I use Dr Elsey's Precious Cat litter. In the beginning I used Dr Elsey's with Cat Attract. My girl was feral so I wanted to make sure she understood the litter box. Once she found the litter box, we had no problems at all.

Good luck!
