I'm wanting to spray the yard for flea control.
Gypsy is 3.5 months old and chews on the landscape bark which makes me hesitant to spray.

I'm looking for safe flea control for use in my 2 gallon hand pump sprayer.

1. Do NOT spray with SPINOSAD!

Please, do not do it and do not use it on your "crops" either.

It is an "organic pesticide" and is also found in flea treatments for dogs & cats.

It is in Comfortis which is SPINOSAD.

It killed my cat via neurotoxic paralysis in 2016!

4. I usually get my yard spray from the garden center at Lowes.

Lowe's is right down the street for me. I make sure to read the fine print so I get the one that kills fleas and ticks. I usually get the kind that you can attach to the end of a garden hose. After I spray, I wait for an hour or so for the yard to thoroughly dry. Then I let the dogs and cats go out and play. I'm sure you could probably mix the same stuff for your pump sprayer and it would work fine. I would be careful about letting your new pup chew on landscape bark. Some of that stuff is toxic for dogs, so be careful with that too. Good luck with your new family member!

5. Most of the bark is natural

No coloring just like bagel bark nuggets.
There may be older stuff buried that wasn't natural but it's decomposed significantly.
I'll be watchful.

That crap is in all sorts of things, even shampoo for head lice!

You don't want this crap!

Death via neurotoxic paralysis is a lot uglier than a few fleas, believe me!

New chew toys, and lots of them, will probably be more attractive than landscape bark to chew on.

And in adult dogs, chewing can be a 'boredom behavior' so providing her with lots to keep her busy should minimize unwanted chewing as well.

If those don't help, be sure the vet checks her for gum or teeth issues, and get them fixed. She may be chewing to relieve soreness (it doesn't really work and can make problems worse, but dogs learn as puppies when their teeth are coming in that chewing is a comfort when their mouths hurt.)

Agree with the responder above-- some of that landscape bark can have nasty substances on/in it, even the stuff that's advertised as 'untreated' can have 'natural' stuff that's bad for dogs to ingest from the original sources (trees, duh!) mixed in.

In addition to spraying the yard, you may want to ask the vet for an internal flea treatment- good ones will last several weeks and protect your new cutie while you're getting the environmental sources under control.

9. We got a chewable flea, tick, etc treatment from our vet.

One dog got a one pill treatment and the other got a chewable that she takes once a month for 3 months. You have a baby, though....may be limited as to what is safe for her. Ask your vet to be sure. Congrats on a beautiful new addition to the family!

13. Don't treat outside

Treat your inside. Try DE powder. Kills fleas by cutting their exoskeletons. It’s natural,basically fine ground clay.
And vacuum! Flea eggs fall off animal where they hang out or jump off the sofa. When hatched larvae move towards light so vacuum floors near bright areas.
Chemical treatments outside kill good and bad bugs.

16. Use the pill once a month that kills fleas & heart worms & other parasites.

Never once had a flea in eight years so far. The brand we use is Sentinel.

Much better than jimmying the environment, plus it protects against fleas, hookworm, whip worm, and roundworm that can be picked up at other locations, like on walks.

I'm with the "don't spray" group. Food grade DE works great, especially along with a good flea comb. You might look into Brewer's Yeast tabs, which supposedly makes animals less desirable to fleas. Chewy sells them. If you want to get the stuff the vets prescribe at a lesser cost, search online for Sierra Pet Meds which is in Australia and you can order from them without a prescription.

18. She is cute! Diatomaceous Earth is the only non toxic

Control I know of. Works great, and there is a food grade. I always keep food grade around for parasites. Will not hurt at all if ingested, helps to control internal parasites as well.
She is so young, I know there is a minimum age warning for certain toxic parasite control measures.
