It's Black Cat Appreciation Day!

2. We had one that died two years ago. She was an indoor/outdoor cat. Coco was 22 years old.

4. We have a tuxedo cat named Coco.

We rescued her a couple of months ago, she's 6 years old and will hopefully last as long as your Coco. Her eyes are great big green ones, just like the cat in the picture. Sorry, I'm not very tech savy and don't know how to import pictures to this site.

3. I have two black cats. One showed up in 2008 and the other

came in 2010. They are best buds, but the older one dislikes my white one and is mean to him.

5. The late great Morpheus

He was a street cat that liked to hang out around our house. Our neighbors down the street had him fixed, but he wasn't their cat either. They called him Jimi Hendrix. He had this froggy sounding meow that was something like Edward G Robinson or James Cagney saying 'yeah'. He disappeared a couple of years ago and many months later our neighbors on the next block told us he had been hit by a car. We all wanted to take him in, but he would not stay in anyone's home. He was as friendly as could be though.

9. House Panthers are part Siamese. That's why they often have the low-pitched voice. nt

Last night she was looking at moths on the window screen after dark and chirping at them.

14. I have a lynx point Siamese, Lucy, who is actually just 1/2 Siamese, though she looks purebred.

She also has a squeaky voice.

Part Siamese don't always have the Meezer voice, but they often do. Tico doesn't meow, though Siamese usually do, with that characteristics deep Siamese voice.

But he "mmmrrrs" a lot (very chatty, another Meezer trait). His voice is deep and rich, and he often sounds as though he is cooing, like a turtledove.

13. I have a siamese too. She never stops 'talking'.

She has a scratchy voice too, but much higher pitch than Morph had. We inherited her when my mother in law passed away about 7 years ago.

23. I hope he went fast too. All we knew was that he was gone.

We didn't find out he had been hit by a car until almost 6 months after it happened. We had hoped someone had taken him in, but we all kind of knew that was unlikely. He was a free spirit. Now we have an orange cat named Max that lives on our carport. He will come into our house but it's very crowded and he doesn't like the dogs much. Max came from the neighbors house behind us. They were foreclosed on and had to leave. The guy who lived there wanted to take Max in, but he ended up on a friend's couch. Max really wasn't his cat anyway. Max is just another stray community cat. We took him in and got him fixed and got all his shots. He's got the notch in his ear too.

8. K&R. I also have a darling house panther, Tico (short for Gatico--i.e., "Kitten").

Tico was a feral cat about 18 months to 2 years old when I grabbed him 4 years ago. House panthers are usually, perhaps even always, part Siamese. Tico certainly is. And as is typical of Siamese cats, he is very friendly and people oriented.

He used to visit my other 3 cats at the window, and he always shadowed me on my walks, but never got close enough for me to touch him. Then on July 2 four years ago, after he shadowed me on my walk, I sat for well over 2 hours on my porch steps cuddle-talking until he was close enough for me to grab him and carry him inside. Because it was close to the Fourth of July, I feared he might run away and either get lost or get hit by a car when people started shooting off fireworks. I have known of dogs and cats that has happened to during the days around the Fourth.

At the time I didn't realize he was a feral, because he was neutered and well fed. I went door to door but couldn't find his owner. I was going to offer to take him off their hands, because he was outside in all weather, no matter how ugly it was, so I figured they didn't much care about him.

But when I called the Humane Society to see if anyone had called looking for him, my description of him led the woman at the shelter to tell me he was a feral.

I knew most TNR programs take off the top of one ear to indicate a feral has been neutered, but
I didn't know our local program just cuts a tiny notch in the ear instead. I told her he must have been in a fight some time ago because he had a clean notch in one ear, and that's when she said he was a feral. I think someone in this area must put out food for ferals, because he was quite sleek and healthy. OTOH, there are plenty of small prey animals around here, too.

I kept him inside for three weeks, so he could bond with me and recognize his new home. But as a former feral, he still goes nuts if he doesn't get a little "outsy-doorsy" time. I let him out for one or two hours a day in nice weather, but only when I am home and can keep checking on him. He also comes in when I call him. My other three cats are indoor cats, though I do take them out on the porch and into the yard with me sometimes. They can't go out alone, though.

But Tico is a very street smart cat. Even I can't just walk up to him and touch him outside. I have to sit down and cuddle talk him if I want to pet him when outside. Outside he is alert to every movement, even at a distance, and crouches at the ready, to run if something should seem dangerous.

Inside he is mellow, cuddly, and playful. Outside, he is alert, cautious and suspicious. I imagine that is why he was able to survive on his own for up to 2 years as a feral.

Anyway, he is now 5 and a half to 6 years old. He is best friends with my 8-year-old Siamese girl kitty, but my 13-year-old girl kitties just ignore him, and he ignores them.

I've always wanted my own house panther. I feel lucky that Tico found me and let me adopt him.

Most black cats I've seen have been somewhat smaller.

Great background for Tico. So glad he has a home, and his own human, and cat friends.

16. I have had four cats in my life, three have just happened to be black.

And they all found me. I now have Felix who just turned four, discovered him as a little kitten in a supermarket parking lot, and he's grown up into a beautiful cat. He's has long hair and a huge poufy tail. Amazingly, he looks much like my beloved Rhiannon, the best cat I'll ever know.

22. Me, too! He was determined, but then so was I

They were doing construction at that supermarket so there was construction all over, plus it's right at a major intersection. It was not the place for a kitten. I don't know what I would have done without the help of a young guy who worked at the store and his wife who came to pick him up, they were as determined as I was. The vet said he was about 7 weeks, he was a tough little guy. I have lots of pix, but they're on Photobucket. *sigh*
