(2,993 posts)Far more so than dogs. I do not question the strength of the bond between a dog and his or her human family, but cats are more selective.

(267 posts)I always tell him that we saved each other. A year after my brother was killed, and I was on my back deck every night struggling to write a victim's impact statement for the sentencing. I was under a huge amount of stress with everything that had happened to my family, and I knew that I really needed to convince the judge to impose the maximum... and I saw his little head peek around the corner at me. Each night I'd set out a little bowl for him, and after about a week he let me touch him. He was so beat up. His eyes and ears were caked, and his fur was all matted and filthy. Two weeks in and he would lay in my lap and purr a little bit, and after a few days of that I started leaving the back door open and putting his bowl on the kitchen floor. About three weeks, and I just closed the door behind him one night so I could let a vet see him the next morning. We're about 4 years in now, and he owns the place. He doesn't like to be out of sight of me. So, if he's napping and I leave the room, he'll wake up and start crying and running from room to room until he finds me again. Never had a cat like this one.

Your patience and compassion saved his life, no doubt about that.
Sorry for the loss of your brother, and so sorry for the manner in which you lost him.
So glad you adopted a lost fur angel.
