(27,813 posts)We were an online book group at our first ever in-person meeting. We ranged in age about 30 years, starting in our late twenties, all of us white. We debated cats and dogs for five minutes or so, and then the only other person there, a young (maybe 25) African-Americsn man interrupted and said, "Ladies, I don't know you, but I have to weigh in on the side of dogs'.
I am still laughing, and it's been 19 years.

(34,403 posts)from November to April isn't a fun proposition. It's also nice to be able to go away overnight and not have to worry about the cats. I love their attitude. If they love you, it's because you earned their love and trust, not that it was bred into them.
I do think dogs are adorable, one isn't "better" than the other.

(9,267 posts)And believe me, they let you know - are often Republicans. They are authoritarian types who simply cant abide a mere animal that doesnt listen or treat them with respect.
Dogs are fine (I adore my granddog) but cats are the best.

(102,294 posts)Right now, my sleeping doggy girl is tucked in as closely as she can to the small of my back, bringing the ultimate warmth and comfort. While I am without kitty at the moment, they would undoubtedly be on top of my head...LOL A different kind of comfort, I guess...

My way of thinking, sooner or later the claws and teeth sink into you.
Woof.

(22,897 posts)I think that introverts prefer cats and extroverts prefer dogs
in general-- not that there aren't exceptions

Cats are IT for me, BTW

(43,049 posts)It was then that I discovered that cats are capable of the same deep affection for you that dogs can have-- you just have to be close to them to see it.
If I had the time to deal with a dog these days, I would of course want to have one, or more, but I can't give it the time it deserves right now. Cats are perfect for people like me. Eventually, adding a dog to the menagerie would be ideal.

(22,897 posts)Cats are rather arrogant, in their way-- they're straightforward about what they want and don't care if it's inconvenient for us. Dogs, I believe, are more malleable (you can teach them NOT to do something irritating) but cats are who they are and make no apology for it. Just my two cents.
They intrigue me mightily, though

(4,492 posts)Sure they can bite and scratch (when provoked) but a dog bite can be much more harmful than a cat bite (this is all dependent on the size of the dog).
Cats don't need to be walked. You don't need to invest in training to be a responsible cat owner. If you go away for a weekend, you can leave a clean ltiter box and large bowl of food and Kitty will be fine.
And lastly, you don't need to pick up fresh shit with a plastic bag.
