Cool article in my local paper about people who rescue newborn kittens!

Bitty Kitty Brigade is part of an expanding national network of rescue initiatives that have appeared in the past decade — from the Bottle Baby Nursery Program at Texas’ Austin Pets Alive to the Best Friends Kitten Nursery in Salt Lake City.

Fueled in part by heart-melting photos of kitties on social media, in-home, volunteer fostering of neonatal cats is growing rapidly. And kitten crusaders like Hannah Shaw (aka Kitten Lady) have become social media stars. (Her recently released how-to book, “Tiny But Mighty: Kitten Lady’s Guide to Saving the Most Vulnerable Felines,” also landed on the New York Times bestseller list.)

The article mentioned Austin Pets Alive, but before that by at least a decade, the Austin Humane Society had a fabulous foster program for the babies....there are more homeless litters of kittens than puppies. I began the foster program, conducting the orientation and assigning the babies to their foster homes. We left Austin for the boonies in 1999, but I continued to rescue...eventually saving about 500...because I was able to turn them over to the humane society for adoption. When you rescue for as many years as I did, you eventually have quite the collection of unadoptables...not to mention the expense of self-funding testing, wormings, vaccinations, fixings, and all the other things that have to be done. So, a couple of years ago I converted to an unofficial sanctuary, although I still help people who can't afford things. I'm always so happy to learn of others who take on this valuable and much needed service! Of course, there are so many areas that need help, anyone wanting to help in whatever field is sure to find a lid to fit one's pot!❤
