my best buddy Simba died today

I adopted him from Humane Society when he was four months old. He was a mutt—probably a mix of German shepherd, golden retriever, and pit butt et al. He was my best friend and best buddy from day one. He grew to 70 pounds but never understood that he was big. He wanted to play with small dogs but they were often afraid of his size.

He wanted to be on my lap and be with me always. All my friends adored him because he was so perfect and loving and affectionate. If he was uncertain or afraid, he would run and try to hide behind me. He was not very brave. His favorite time of the day was when we took him on his walks. In later years, we took the same route and he did his daily patrol sniffing most bushes and peeing on them

He want fast. The last few months he started breathing heavily. The vet thought it was arthritis and put him on pain pills. He stabilized and then the last few days he stopped eating, drinking, couldn’t get up, and wanted to be left alone for the first time in his life. We took him to vet who thought he had a ruptured spleen and he was in significant pain. We did not want him to suffer anymore! He was 12 and a half years old.

So I know how you feel. Focus on the good times and joy you shared with your pet.

Our dog is now blind, deaf and mute. Just a year and half ago she was an active and fast running dog.
Now she can not even find her food bowl. We will keep her alive so long as she is eating. I don't mind taking her out in the backyard every 1.5-2 hours cuz she can't hold the bladder any longer.

You’ll know when it’s time. That’s what they told me about Daisy and it turned out to be true. But she wasn’t in pain and she still was eating so it was a hard decision, but I knew.

Actually I have no problem taking care of a helpless dog, but her quality of life is way down now. Probably better to put her down before she develops pain or can't eat. My biggest problem right now is keeping her eyes clean. Being totally blind, she has become very defensive about me touching anything close to her eyes. She tries to bite my fingers. When she had vision, it was never a problem and I even brushed her teeth daily.

I saw the dog whisperer putting his hands right in on a dog and let them bite, and I thought, brave, but no way I’m doing THAT, so I put my winter gloves on and tried the technique that way. She learned that I wasn’t going to pull away, stopped biting and we became friends.

Don’t know if that helps with your situation, but at least it might prevent a bad bite.

This is hard. My Mom died two months ago so it’s a lot to handle and grieve. Simba was such a love. When I went to Humane Society long ago, I was just stopping by to think about a new dog. I met Simba and he met me and I knew I wasn’t leaving without him. We both just bonded immediately.

handicapped daughter. Played a game with her (the only one she was smart enough to play) and cuddled her scoliosis in her back to comfort her. He beat up big dogs that he thought were a danger to me. I miss him still after more than 25 years he has been gone. I need some kleenex now.

.... have given him. When they can't get up it is usually some kind of heart/lung failure and the
not drinking and eating might very well be kidney failure. It was Simba's time.

I had to do the same thing Sept. 1 2018 w/my black lab and it hurt terrible but it was his time too.
I told myself that it was no more dogs for me and yet I now have a 9 month old female yellow lab
pup and she is a pain in the butt but she is here now.

I wish you well.

the love of dogs is has always been a big part of my life, and it is always so hard to say good bye to them. But, I have always been grateful that I can offer them a peaceful passage when their time comes.
We had to say good bye to our beautiful Maggie yesterday. The sweetest most loving Great Dane, she was a few months into her 9th year.
So I share your grief, and so understand the sadness. It's awful, but I think our time with our dogs is so worth it.
Peace and love to you.

..he was 14 and slowly succumbing to kidney failure so at least I had time to say goodbye to him. I have had 2 Goldens die of Hemangiosarcoma..this sounds like what your precious Simba passed from. Its very quick and nothing you could have done would have saved him. Goldens especially are prone to it and it attacks the spleen the most. You did right by your best friend. Godspeed sweet Simba..what a GOOD boy you are! ((HUGS))

My father used to point out the instances in which God clearly didn't think things through adequately. For example, stepping backward and colliding with someone...not noting that the chair you're going to sit in isn't quite there...all such accidents could've been prevented had God done creation better and given us an eye at the back of our head. Letting pets have such a short time with us is just flat cruel.

My deepest sympathies for your loss. By the way, my Maltese baby died from a ruptured spleen. I knew something was wrong when I saw he was blue...rushed him to his vet, but the vet didn't think he'd survive the iffy surgery at his age. Although my philosophy of life compels me to work on how I react to situations and handle them, I must admit that when it comes to the loss of our loved ones, it's frustrating to not have complete control.

Simba's body is gone. The rest of him will be waiting to cuddle with you again. Promise.

Tue Oct 29, 2019, 12:06 PM
Oct 2019
Next morning the minute I was about,
He was at the door to be let out.
As much as to say, “I have paid my call.
You mustn’t feel hurt if now I’m all
For getting back somewhere, or further on.”
I opened the door, and he was gone.
I was to taste in little the grief
That comes of dogs’ lives being so brief.
Only fraction of ours, at most,
He might have been the dream of a ghost,
In spite of the way his tail had smacked
My floor, so hard and matter-of-fact.
