A couple combed a rural Montana community for their Border collie, Katie.
After a late night at a stock-car race, Carole and Verne King returned to their dog-friendly hotel in Kalispell, Mont., and made a devastating discovery.
Their 7-year-old Border collie, Katie, was no longer in the room. She had apparently managed to unlatch the door, possibly spooked by a thunderstorm that had swept through the area. At the front desk, an attendant said she had seen an anxious dog bolt out the front door hours before.
The Kings were stunned. In the small city of 23,000 people that backs up to the sprawling wilderness near Glacier National Park, surrounded by forests and fields, where would they even start looking?
Over the next 57 days, the couple set out on a desperate search that included night-vision goggles, animal-tracking cameras and horse manure brought in from the familys farm in Eastern Washington. Ms. King, a postal carrier, quit her job.
Every night going to bed, it was gut-wrenching, said Mr. King. Is she warm? Did she get to eat today? It tore us up.

(417 posts)I lost my cat for 8 weeks. I stupidly let her out almost exactly a year ago. Opened the patio door for fresh air & didn't realize the screen wasn't pulled all the way over. I spent 56 days searching. I completely understand the obsession. I lived it. I bought a Canary camera. Had live traps that she was to smart to go into to. Every time there was a thunderstorm, i panicked. Thank God for a wonderful neighbor who was feeding her & Youtube for cat meowing videos that lured her out of the bushes. It truly is the worst feeling to have a missing family member.

(16,903 posts)A lady had just got a rescue dog, and 2 days after she got her to her new home, she slipped the leash and ran away. They searched for the dog for close to 2 months, brought in professional dog trackers, had posters all over the area, lots of support. I followed the search on Facebook, and it was gripping. There were so many people looking for the dog, and the last few days, she was in a subdivision, going from yard to yard, and they finally caught her and got her back to the person who adopted her.
