I think that dogs are smart enough to know that we are "different" from them. They don't expect us to lick them and smell their butts, but they do tolerate the things that we do to them instead.

i guess it is just a broader thing of how their minds handle the obvious fact that we are so very different.
but then again i have a dog trying to make friends with my chickens.

That is a human trait.

Dogs wonder "what?". What's that thing? What is he doing? What's that sound?
But once they get some kind of confirmation they are satisfied and don't take it further.

if you watch my videos of my bully trying to get the chickens to play, he is pretty clearly, to me, wondering why they don't want to play. he clearly has expectations of certain things, like a peck on the nose translates to him as how his brother starts a game, he gets wound up and ready to go, and stomps his little feet when they don't follow through.
