10 apartment units evacuated after venomous coral snake slithers out of terrarium

A slithery serpent gave his owner the slip. A 6-month-old pet coral snake somehow managed to escape its terrarium home early Monday morning and creep out of its owner’s apartment in the German city of Cologne.

The unidentified owner alerted officials, who immediately called for an evacuation of 10 homes in the building. “They were all tossed out of bed at 6 a.m.,” explained neighbor Paul-Günter Spiess. “Their nerves are shot.”

The owner claimed 20 fire and animal rescue personnel were used during the to search of his beloved 8-inch critter. In an attempt to track down the snake, officials laid down sawdust and utilized food traps as a means of capture. Searchers also cased the basement and outside building proximity.

Despite its immaturity, this particular coral snake’s venomous bite would provoke mild to moderate neurological reactions, according to officials, who urged “extreme caution” in tracking it down.

But by late Monday evening, more than 12 hours into the great escape, the snake was located in a hallway near a food trap. Residents were then given the green light to return to their homes.

The only people that should have them are licensed snake milkers, who harvest venom to make anti-venom.

Here's a coral snake:

The red stripes are always adjacent to the yellow stripes on a coral snake ("Red and yellow, kill a fellow" ).

"We need a photo of a coral snake."

"What do they look like?"

"They have red, yellow, and black stripes."

"OK."

(Enters term search: snake, red, yellow, black, into Google)

"Got it!"
