(115,735 posts)but not to other cats. The reason why might be because they are trying to communicate with humans as they would with a kitten, or it may be as simple as because cats quickly learn that meowing is how they get people to do what they want.

(8,445 posts)Her kittens are a little over three years old, and she still meows at them to notify them that she has procured a tasty meal of bird, mouse or lizard. Well, the lizard is just a "fake meal" because they don't eat them, and hardly ever kill them.
I guess I never really realized that I've never noticed them meowing at each other. The mom is always nagging me for something, and it really gets on my nerves, but not nearly as much as that leg rubbing thing.
This morning my neighbor and I were chatting outside and the mama cat even rubbed on her legs. My neighbor thought it was great because she had been trying to get her to be friendly toward her for years, but I bet when she later discovered the cat hair on her pants she wasn't so impressed.
I don't think I've ever heard the dilute tortie "kitten" meow. She'll walk through the room several times and then stop and stare at me when she wants food, but she's very feral so she doesn't want to chat.

(442 posts)...my big dumb orange cat meows at his much more intelligent and demure tortie big sister occasionally. She just looks at him like he's an idiot.

(8,445 posts)I had a cat door installed in my garage window a year ago, and I'm not sure she's figured it out yet. The others know it's there, so one would think she'd see them using it.
She's very cute, but just not very smart.

(9,267 posts)My Charlie talks to me all the time, just little meows when he wants a pet or just when he sees me. The late Freddie (my DU alias) was the most silent cat Ive ever known. Purred up a storm but NEVER meowed.

(14,764 posts)Usually it's "where are you?". One will meow with no human near, and the other will respond from another room and they will get together.

(17,006 posts)I rescued a 6 month old feral. It took him years to learn, from my other cats, to meow. I thought it was cool at first now its like, For the love of god, shut up!!!

(21,768 posts)The other cat comes close to the house in the evening and meows softly until my cat goes to the window and looks out.
Then they sit there, sometimes for hours, staring at each other. During this time, I have not heard either cat make a sound.
I assume the outdoor cat is meowing to "call" and thus communicate with my cat.
