Related: About this forumIs anybody here familiar with silvervine, specifically as used for cats? I had never heard of it
it until I was at Petco the other day, looking for catnip. The only bag thy had said it was 20% silvervine, and the staffer was vague and clearly not knowledgable about what it is. Just looked it up, but most of the information seemed to come from those selling it. Wondering if this is one of those "bright, shiny things".
Any information or advice would be greatly appreciated.

(16,402 posts)It's new to me, too. I checked Amazon and they have all kinds of chew sticks and toys made of it, so I ordered something to see how my four like it.

(14,649 posts)Cats who dont like catnip might like silvervine. We got a mix from Chewy that our catnip-addict loves. But the one who doesnt like catnip doesnt understand what the big deal is. Maybe shed like it if it didnt contain any catnip at all, but I doubt it. Shes just not into herbs.

(14,649 posts)I read somewhere that some cats just don't have the catnip gene. My other one isn't just disinterested. She actually seems to find the smell offensive. So I might try some silvervine alone for her. I don't even know what it smells like by itself. If it works, I'll try growing it as well.

(12,480 posts)Is a woody vine that gives cats a buzz. Not as powerful buzz as catnip gives but it definitely alters the consciousness. Makes my Othello mellow. It is not toxic to cats.
Othello's silver vine toy consists of a ball made of silver vine with a compressed catnip ball inside the silver vine ball.
He loves it.
