Related: About this forumCats definitely have "human-like" facial expressions.
There was a stray cat lingering around my apartment building that the neighbor woman started feeding and watering. She already has three cats in her unit, so she had plenty of cat food to share with the stray.
It had the most pathetic and sad-looking face, and I assumed it was just born that way like "Grouchy Cat" of internet fame.
The retired neighbor woman and her visiting daughter later managed to capture that male cat to get it neutered. And later vet visits helped to heal old scratch wounds (surely from other cats), remove mites from his ears, etc. Blood tests also indicated that he has "feline AIDS", so a weak immune system.
It's still often outdoors, in a covered wooden crate full of straw, but the neighbor let's him stay in her utility room (away from her other cats) when the weather is cold or rainy. According to her, it always uses the litter box in that room and it NEVER complains (with meowing) about being left alone in that room at all (which has a cat bed).
I told the neighbor that I'd let the cat stay in my utility room as well, if she couldn't do it anymore for whatever reason.
That cat acts so loving now! It's so eager to be petted by me and the other neighbors now, whereas it didn't trust anyone when it first appeared.
And the most amazing transformation happened to his face too! He no longer looks like he was born with a permanent "sad" expression on his face, but his eyes are wide open and alert with a "happy" expression instead! It meows and purrs so sweetly too.
I looked for a similar transformation online, and our local stray has gone through an even more pronounced "before and after" change than this one!

(14,855 posts)He scratched her hand pretty deep early-on, when she tried to move his food bowl outside.
It really acted more feral than stray for a few months, so I'm honestly shocked by the change that's happened.
She can even pick it up now, to put it outside for awhile when she needs the utility room (with one door that leads outside and another door that separates it from her kitchen).
Her other cats hiss and act belligerent if they see him, but they mostly don't even know he's there because he's so quiet in that room. (Other than some faint sounds of crunching when he decides to eat.) Then she'll usually see him lounging on the cat bed when she opens the door from the kitchen, like he's in cat-heaven. Then he'll meow and rub on her.

She said he probably knows they're a bunch of spoiled posers.

(14,855 posts)It resembles eyebrows based on the creases in their foreheads anyway.
His former facial expression was more accurately like a combination of angry and sad.
I've given him some tuna-flavored cat treats that supposedly help clean their teeth (I used to have a cat and that package was never opened), but his behavior was already transformed around people by the neighbor woman anyway. Now he's like a friendly neighbor to everyone in this apartment building.

(21,486 posts)facial expressions - happy, alert, drowsy, anxious, angry, sad, disgusted, curious, fearful, affectionate, offended and indignant.
The disgusted look is the one that makes me laugh the most.
