I wish Othello and I could talk to each other..like we do human to human.
He had such wistful eyes when he was laying in that spot of sunshine on my bed.
I wish we could talk about deep philosophic things about life about what he feels or thinks about any given subject. It would be interesting to hear what he thinks of humans and cats..
OTOH
Would he cringe as I sang little songs about him like I do everyday? Probably he'd tell me to shut up, because the cheesyness is unbearable..

(2,813 posts)My voice is gone but Im pretty good at lyrics. Yeah they all cringe a little, but they know the word love is great in a song about them.
Im pretty good at reading Goldies mind as well. She sits and stares. Time to go out, time to eat, time for skritches. Time to go to the vet for another uti. All of these are very deep conversations. And omg, when I swear, its time for her to comfort me and she jumps on the couch and lays her head on my shoulder. Could anything be deeper than that? Existentialism goes right out the window. Love is the perfect philosophy, no words are really needed.

(26,295 posts)They seem to tolerate it. Sophie used to kitty pop me in the face when I sang to her!
And even if we can't actually hold a conversation, both kittens full understand the three words 'Are you hungry?' As soon as I say it, they race to the kitchen.

(21,618 posts)or a CD, but one time when I was humming, she gave me a surprised, alert look, as if wondering how I could make a sound without moving my lips. "Hmm. A new human sound. Is that how they purr?"
She is drawn to whistling so much that she often comes to me if I make a whistling sound that imitates the two syllable cadence of saying her name.
Sometimes I just "chat" with her, telling her how smart, good, and sweet she is. Since she knows a few words, she realizes that humans communicate that way, so she tilts her head or stares at my face as if trying hard to figure out what I'm saying.
I read that a slow blink means, in cat body language, "No hostility, we're friends." I tried it once when she was in a feisty mood and we were having a contest of wills about her getting into forbidden territory. She was thumping her tail and staring defiantly at me as if ready to give me a paw slap. I did the slow blink and she started to calm down. Did it again a couple more times and she blinked back at me. Battle over. It really works. You can "talk" to a cat through body language.
