Related: About this forumKitty litter, cat pans and what time of day do you usually clean them?
I have developed the habit of scooping the 2 pans after I finish my 2nd am coffee, I do the remove all the litter & wash out the pan every 2 weeks the day before rubbish pick up.
Anyone else do similar?

(5,812 posts)I used to use the old fashion stuff, but found a better system from a friend who suggested it -- she had been using it for her cat. She is a long-time cat person and I am a new one. I got my cat when my roommate passed away and was totally clueless about cats. I have told him that if something happened to him, I would care for his cat. He was in his 80s and worried constantly about what would happen to his cat when he died. The litter box almost did me in and I swore I would never have a cat again because of the litter box, but I kept my promise to him to care for his cat after his death. The pellet system has made it so much better and easier!
I'm not sure if I can name the product or the maker because of the TOS on the DU, but I do think you can find it if you search for "pellets" when you are looking for kitty litter.

(86,775 posts)Friend's cat, who adopted me a couple years ago when we all lived in the same location as neighbors, and I used pellets. I found that you can use pellet stove pellets, the cheapest and get them in many places.
You need to change it a little more often but if you tend to the solids after a brief "cure time" it works well. The dust from the clay stuff always makes me sick.

(5,812 posts)underneath there is a sliding tray where a pad is placed that catches the urine which flows through the pellets that are above. The cat urine is not absorbed by the "litter," but is soaked up by the pad in the bottom tray. The BM clumps on the pellets and can be picked off and disposed of in a plastic bag or if close by, in the toilet. Cleaning is a breeze. No odor and no raking the old fashioned, sand-like litter. Also, the pellets are a breeze to sweep up if the cat tosses them out of the equipment. The pellets get tossed once a month and the urine pad gets changed one to two times a week as needed. The box can be wiped clean without any mess that has adhered to it. Clean paper towel does the job in two minutes or less.
I sworn...after the regular litter box...no more cats for any reason. With the new system my friend told me about, I will consider getting another cat.

(9,273 posts)I usually sift right before I go to bed. Boxes are on the basement steps landing. Often one of the boys will stand at the top of the steps and watch so he can christen the newly clean box.

It didn't stop that cat from later urinating on my bed, twice, despite an immaculate litter box with the same brand of unscented litter that was always used.
Took that cat to a vet to see if it had a urinary tract infection or something, but it didn't.
Then I returned that cat to the previous owner. She said that she wasn't giving me a refund, and I replied that I didn't care as I drove away.
I never had such an unfriendly cat in my life. I figured it might've missed the home where it was raised the previous 5 years or something.

(12,480 posts)After breakfast,he usually hits the box to do #2 after breakfast. Thats why I clean it than to get rid of stinky # 2. And so his litter is nicer all day.
