Related: About this forumNarking out the puppers....
Yesterday my esposo comes to the office door and does a "come here" gesture. I'm in the middle of balancing the bank statement, but...
Two puppers in our yard. Hangin' together. One looks a bit younger, my guess is a malamute mix, about 60-70 lbs. The other looks a bit older, some northern breed mix, mostly solid white, blue eyes, a few patches of light caramel here and there, maybe 50-60 lbs. They are obviously besties.
And, they are obviously fascinated by ornjboi Louie B. Mayhem, who is furious at the invasion of HIS territory. He is parked at the sliding doors to the side yard, doing the tail-bushing, growling, 'You wanna lose an eye, big fella? Huh? BRING IT!" cat-thing...
The puppers either think he's too cute for words, or possibly a snack, who knows...
Anyway, I go out to investigate.
The puppers are a bit wary, but most friendly, wagging and bouncing a bit. I get in a couple of pats, and discover both have collars (matching!) and rabies tags. No other ID.
I go out front to see if there's a dog Mom/Dad cruising around with that "Where did you go?" look... nothing.
The puppers follow.
A car drives past, and the malamute mix perks, and then... OFF HE GOES! chasing the car. Halfway up the block, in the middle of the street, he gives up on the car, starts wandering around IN THE STREET at first, then wanders to sniff the boulevard plantings, presumably collecting smell messages from other puppers.
Oh, no... No, no, no... can't have that....
The other one, the mostly-white one, has gone back to keep an eye on Louie.
Neighbors from down the street, putting up holiday decorations, have been watching with concern. They approach, one has a leash in hand.
By this time, the malamute mix has returned to hang out with the other pupper, and they're trading insults with Louie.
They both allow approaching, wagging and okay with a reached-out pat, but back away if we get too close.
I head inside and put up an ultimatum on NextDoor, describing the puppers and identifying where they are, and noting "If they're not claimed in 30 minutes, I'll call Animal Control, because picked up is safer than running loose chasing cars."
When I get back outside, the neighbors have fetched another leash, and one pupper is safely leashed. I manage to pet the other one, and get a hold on the collar, and we have them both safe. Bring 'em around to the front where they are clearly visible, and we chat, and pat the puppers, and give chest-thumps, and ear scritches.
Still no sign of worried dog parents... the puppers are well cared-for, nails clipped, groomed, matching collars. I finally head in and call Animal Control, who send the Dog Whisperer.
Seriously, the guy is GOOD... he approaches slowly, talking nice, with a chip reader in one hand. Gets close enough to scan, and finds a chip in the malamute mix. Good news? Maybe, but he calls dispatch, and the info on the chip is clearly outdated (NOTE: KEEP YOUR FURKIDS' INFO UP TO DATE WITH THE CHIP PROVIDER!) We check the rabies tags, both from the same clinic, but it's in a nearby county, not local. And on a Sunday, no way to follow up right away.
So, off the puppers have to go... ::sniffle:: Dog whisperer makes snookum-cuddle noises with the white one, gets it to one of the open crate doors on the truck. Pupper's willing but it's a big jump, so just a little help from Dog Whisperer and that one's safe. Leash returned to neighbor.
Malamute mix is more skittish. We get around to the other side of the truck to the other open crate. Pupper is wary... Dog Whisperer asks us to stand back a bit, pupper's starting to stress. He does pets, wraps leash around pupper's muzzle, then unwraps, talks low and sweet, quiet and calm. Pupper's still pretty wary, although tail never stops wagging. Such a sweet pupper!
Finally I decide leftover turkey might do the trick and head in to get some... by the time I get back out, pupper is in the crate, neighbor has the leash back, tells me "He's GOOD, dog jumped right in..."
Dog Whisperer collects a little info from us, and off the puppers go.
I update the NextDoor post to alert dog parent(s) (I hope!) where to find their fur kids...
So, fellow DUers, hold those sweet puppers in the Light that they get reunited with their loving human(s) ASAP. (Fortunately our shelter is no-kill, but STILL.... dang... I hated narking 'em out, but... car chasing?)
Better there than dead in the road.
Really hoping they get reunited with their peeps.
sadly,

I sure hope those fur babies are reunited with their humans soon. Please post an update if you hear anything.

(20,760 posts)But not everyone in the area is on there, so... who knows. The neighbors will check with the shelter and let me know, too, I think. They have a dog of their own and FIVE cats, so they know furkid love.
hopefully,
