If a pet is allowed outside though, then I want them to have claws to defend themselves.

While they are intended to be indoor only, at least one is an escape artist and has gotten out several times. First time he was gone for five weeks and returned to his former home. Since then, he might spend the night or a few hours out, but always come back when enticed with crunchies.

The newest cat is fast and I worry about him speeding out the door sometime, too, especially since he's seen the older, bigger cat get out once since we've had the little one.
