A while back it was tortilla vandalism. This afternoon it's CHEESE vandalism!
He actually licked the entire bag, before clawing his way in. And he did it in an amazingly BRIEF window of opportunity.
He's lucky it's his birthday, and that he's so cute.

(26,266 posts)He knocked the butter dish down onto the floor. FORTUNATELY the stick of butter stayed in the upturned top, and he was licking away at the bottom part where the butter normally sits.
And, he took a stroll through the mostly empty dish pan. Maybe I need to give him another bath, in that sink, and he'll think twice about wandering around the territory.
I remember as a young child being caught with a stick of butter, enjoying its yummy sweetness. Lol
Can't fault him.there!

As a toddler, someone always had to keep a close watch on her while the table was being set for dinner. If she got the chance, she'd swipe the stick of butter right out of its dish while my mom's back was turned.

(115,721 posts)I learned to put all food away in cat-proof locations. Not all cats are chow hounds like that one, but he was into everything. 30 years later I still hide food out of habit, although my current cat isn't a counter-surfer like some were.

(22,528 posts)Everything is stored in the off oven, fridge or pantry which now has a gadget on the door because they used to open it!!!!! Cats aren't as dumb or innocent as they look!!!!!!!

(9,267 posts)But if you let a bag of their favorite dry food out they will chew through the bag to get some. Weve learned to keep the food in Tupperware containers and keep new bags in the pantry on a high shelf.

(26,266 posts)Towards the end, Sophie developed a bit of a taste for butter but that was easy enough to remedy.
Madoc is just on a constant hunt, despite there always being kibble available.

(21,482 posts)She is 6 now and not nearly as bad as she used to be.
There was a time when she hid in a dark corner of my counter where it was hard to know that she was there. Then she would make a sudden pounce on whatever food was on the counter and run like hell with it in her mouth. One time she plunged her whole face into the flour in a mixing bowl.
She quickly learned that if she knocked a tub of whipped margarine onto the floor, the lid would pop off.
Since she gets into cupboards easily, I keep her bag of dry food in the cupboard that is directly over the stove hood. The slant of the hood keeps her from access to that cupboard.
She has mellowed a bit in the past year. She knows now that if she wants a treat from an open tuna can or lunch meat when I make a sandwich she has to be on the floor and wait for me to give it to her. But it took a LONG time for her to mature to that level of patience and trust that I will give her something IF she behaves.

(15,265 posts)some were feral. I think I was in high school and got home from school one day and my mother left a note to take the chicken that was cooking in the oven out a 4pm abd put it on the oven top. It was a baking sheet with chicken breasts.
We had an attached garage with a door the was the entrance into the kitchen and we often left the lift up garage door open.
The scent of the cooked chicken was wafting through the air.The kitchen door had an outer storm door thst had a hydraulic piston that would make it shut automatically and it would hesitant a little before it would shut. I went out to get the mail and when I came back in one of the neighbors cats bolted into the kitchen took a left and immediately lept up onto the stove amd started attacking the chicken it was definitely in predator mode. The cat was none to pleased when I removed it. In the end he got the free meal. We just put the chicken outside since we couldn't trust any if it was safe at that point.

(10,749 posts)It was a gift to him, and he showed his appreciation in the best way he could. The only way you could have improved on this generous gift was to put it in an open box.
If it was important to you, you would have secured it properly, and he would have meowed until you gave in. Same result on the end.
Crafty little things.

(26,266 posts)But, fortunately, they are also very sweet and playful. I just keep thanking my lucky stars that Gryff settled in as if he was from the same liter as Madoc. And, so fast. People were telling me to give it a couple of weeks, but within just a few days they were best buddies.
