(10,279 posts)One night I was late coming to bed. She accompanied me as I opened the bedroom door and tried to sneak in and not disturb my wife. Failed. My wife awoke and screammed bloody murder. My YL (3 yr, 90 lb) leapt from my side, turned in the air, landed on the bed between my wife and me, and gave me the most aggressive growls and flashing of teeth that I had ever seen. I was never more proud of her!
Later, I learned that she had a "protection priority". In decending order, they were: 1. Babies and little children, 2. my wife, 3. women, esp. women with babies, and finally, 5. me vs. adult males.
I didn't teach her that -- she came as a puppy, pre-wired to behave that way.
I miss my pal.

(70,581 posts)... to people and they were both times that action was needed. One time a "creepy guy" came
up to talk to be son and my lab Fluebie was having none of that and attacked the guy who then
ran away. Another time I was doing snow work around the North Market and a man with problems
started yelling at me and then waving his arms and my Fluebie jumped from the pick up cab's
window and pinned the man against a brick wall. I told the guy he should keep moving which he
did.
My current female lab who I thought was slow is the smartest I have ever had. She started with
bringing me her leash when she wants to go out but now it is my shoes, cap, and jacket too.

(6,254 posts)cream colored golden retriever who is great dog but stubborn. The golden ret. has great personality only compliant is cant keep up with hair around the house. Both dogs are female but the black lab is much better obeying. The Golden much more independent and knows how to turn on the personality when she wants something.
