I have the perfect spot for a shelter - next to the house and shelter by shrubs in a garden I have never really developed. It was my plan to put up a small border fence and turn it into a Zen Garde, so now it can be a Cat Zen Garden. And I found a couple of nice shelters I can have delivered so I'm now figuring out which would be best suited.
Hopefully I can keep things friendly with my neighbor until I can get this done. I'm just glad that, because of her dislike of animals, she didn't take some sort of drastic action to remove them.

(30,702 posts)They rent that house and I'm not aware of the maintenance agreement. The landscaping has been dreadfully neglected, for years, which is why their shrub areas have been sheltering all kinds of wild life, right next to the house foundation. I've counted families of more than 6 ground hogs, in past years. They destroyed my herb garden.
They are now getting things back in shape and I'm so glad we can work together on both the feral situation, along with removing some of the 'junk' trees and shrubs that border the property line.

(86,043 posts)I had a rescue of sorts this morning at 4am. Last night I heard a dog barking for a short time and passed it off as the dog next door because it didn't last long. It's around+20F and snowing. Around 3:30am I hear barking right outside my place so I got up and investigated after it barked for a half hour.
It was a small German Shepard and it was barking at the place next to me for some reason, they don't have a dog. I couldn't get it to come to me or stop barking so I called the local dispatch and about an hour later, the dog still constantly barking.
When the cop showed up I went out and helped him decide what to do. I was able to, then, coax the dog to me and sit so we could read its tags. It was a neighbor's dog further up the row, 11 yo male. We were able to get a leash on him right away with no resistance. By now it's almost 6m and the cop went to see if the owners were home, I went back inside to make coffee and warm up.
Poor dog was out all night in the cold, no wonder he was barking. All these little houses look the same so I can see where he might not be able to tell which one was which, snow may have covered the scent. But now it occurs to me that someone would do a welfare check on the owners, I don't know them but it seems odd they would take off for the weekend without making sure they had the dog secured.
At least the dog can stay warm and be fed at the shelter until it gets sorted out.

(86,043 posts)I just can't not help when something is amiss. I've helped all kinds of animals from neighborhood squirrels to wild bald eagles, I'll help humans too but animals are more my thing.

(57,073 posts)Never had the privelege of helping an Eagle though! Squirrels, possums, raccoons, birds, chipmunks, etc.
I firmly believe this is why Nature gifted us opposable thumbs & extra/different cognitive abilities, so we can help.

(15,952 posts)My Logan, in his later years, would sometime get confused inside our apartment. He would suddenly start meowing forlornly for no apparent reason. Whenever it happened, all I had to do was talk to him in a soothing tone. The familiar sound of my voice reassured him that all was well and calmed him right down down every time.
I shudder to think what might have happened if he had ever gotten outside once his memory started to go.

(15,952 posts)He sounded soooo pitiful when he did that, but I felt good about being able to make him feel better.
He crossed the rainbow bridge in January 2018, and we adopted Willow a few months later. She's been a great blessing.

Sorry to hear of his crossing the Bridge, but glad Willow has brought joy back into your life!
